Por fin, Hap Thompson, ex delincuente abandonado por su mujer, ha sentado cabeza. Después de años de chapotear en las ciénagas del delito, ha encontrado un buen trabajo. Pero, no conforme, acepta otro trabajo, no sólo más peligroso, sino decididamente ilegal: hacerse cargo de recuerdos, por ejemplo, de gente que no quiere que éstos surjan en alguna prueba policial. En una ocasión en que él se ha ehcho cargo de un recuerdo especialmente intenso, el cliente desaparece. No es para menos: al final de su recuerdo, hay un crimen. Para Hap es vital encontrar a su cliente y devolverle su recuerdo.

Fun book to read. Humorous in a dry noir way. A bit of noir, a bit of cyberpunk, a good helping of absurdity. I was not pleased with the last part of the book where he ventures off into metaphysical nonsense, almost as though the absurdity wasn't entertaining enough, eh? ( )

This is one of those books that I can't decide exactly how I feel. I've had a preview copy sitting on my shelves forever and I've never heard it mentioned elsewhere so I think it didn't achieve literary heights, but there are some definite good points to this book. I think maybe the author tried to too hard to shove too many good ideas into one title. I couldn't quite figure out the metaphors that he was trying to add, but I do appreciate the humanity and tone that he set. I found myself enamored with individual lines but I couldn't become enamored with the book itself. I love books that leave me thinking and this did but I am not sure for the right reasons. Even as I write this I feel as if I am in a hall of mirrors and things are not reflected correctly but if I turn the corner all will be made clear, but which corner? Maybe the author deserves credit for this insane rambling, sometimes feelings of wonder are almost better than bad or good. ( )

Verdict: un cran en dessous d'Avance rapide quand même (soyons honnête) mais un bon polar qui flirte avec le quotidien réinventé, le fantastique.

Un petit extrait pour commencer: "Il n'y avait personne. Ce sont des choses qui sautent aux yeux, ça. Dans ces cas-là, les objets et les meubles prennent des allures suffisantes et omniprésentes, comme toujours quand ils ont tout l'espace pour eux seuls". C'est dans ce type de phrase incisive qu'on retrouve avec plaisir le Michael Marshall que j'aime. Celui des petits détails qui plantent un monde un peu déjanté: la voiture qui freine pour laisser passer un troupeau de cafetières, un réveille-matin qui poursuit le protagoniste ... A ce titre, ce livre de Michael Marshall m'a séduit par son originalité dont Avance rapide nous avait déjà donné un vertigineux aperçu. Comme en plus c'est disponible en poche, ce serait dommage de se priver.

Par contre, l'alchimie entre le ton décalé et l'intrigue sans être raté m'a un peu moins convaincu. Les pages sur internet ont un peu vieilli. Il y a quelques petits passages à vide. La fin peine à convaincre. On a l'impression qu'il y a bien tous les ingrédients pour faire un excellent livre (pour ne pas le renommer: Avance rapide) mais que l'auteur s'est contenté d'un bon livre. Certains éléments du roman auraient mérité d'être davantage justifiés pour que le lecteur y adhère.

Bon, j'aimerais ne pas terminer sur une note négative : l'ouvrage est un peu bancal mais tout bancal qu'il est, il reste d'un bon niveau et si vous n'avez pas lu encore Avance rapide, c'est par celui-là qu'il faut commencer car il vous donne une idée des qualités d'écrivain de Michael Marshall à un prix modique.
