"From one of the most popular and bestselling authors of our time, a penetrating and hilarious new novel about sex, love, and identity on the frontlines of America's culture wars. Eve Fletcher is trying to figure out what comes next. A forty-six-year-old divorcee whose beloved only child has just left for college, Eve is struggling to adjust to her empty nest when one night her phone lights up with a text message. Sent from an anonymous number, the mysterious sender tells Eve, "U R my MILF!" Over the months that follow, that message comes to obsess Eve. While leading her all-too-placid life--serving as Executive Director of the local senior center by day and taking a community college course on Gender and Society at night--Eve can't curtail her own interest in a porn website called MILFateria.com, which features the erotic exploits of ordinary, middle-aged women like herself. Before long, Eve's online fixations begin to spill over into real life, revealing new romantic possibilities that threaten to upend her quiet suburban existence. Meanwhile, miles away at the state college, Eve's son Brendan--a jock and aspiring frat boy--discovers that his new campus isn't nearly as welcoming to his hard-partying lifestyle as he had imagined. Only a few weeks into his freshman year, Brendan is floundering in a college environment that challenges his white-dude privilege and shames him for his outmoded, chauvinistic ideas of sex. As the New England autumn turns cold, both mother and son find themselves enmeshed in morally fraught situations that come to a head on one fateful November night. Sharp, witty, and provocative, Mrs. Fletcher is a timeless examination of sexuality, identity, parenthood, and the big clarifying mistakes people can make when they're no longer sure of who they are or where they belong"--… (mehr)

I mostly enjoyed this story about a middle aged single Mom dealing with her empty nest. Like other Tom Perotta books it has a dark, depressing vibe to it although ultimately it's not a super dark book even though it tackles the dark underbelly of loneliness.

It spends a lot of time exploring sexual relationships, gender, sexual fantasy and experimentation and how that differs among people of different generations. That was all interesting to me but might put off some people if they aren't expecting a lot of discussion about porn in their casual reading.

Probably closer to a 4 so really 3.5 ( )

Interesting, but somehow ALL the characters were slightly annoying to me. Can't put my finger on it. ( )

Fun read with well defined characters. If I had the time I would have ripped through this book in two sessions. Excellent story with an insightful narrative from several character perspectives.

I'd love to hear feedback from the 40 , single women out there on what they thought.

Let me know ( )

The first time I was disappointed in a Tom Perrotta book. Long and boring. ( )

Mrs. Fletcher is the story of a divorced, middle-aged woman whose son goes off to college, leaving her with an empty nest. It's an enjoyable fast-paced read (the writing vaguely reminded me of a male [a:Liane Moriarty|322069|Liane Moriarty|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1459827224p2/322069.jpg]). The highlight of this book, for me, is how incredibly in tune with current culture Perrotta is. I have college age sons, and there wasn't an element of college life that Perrotta missed. The whole book is very "of the moment."

It's fun reading how protagonist, Eve Fletcher, tries to find herself as she adjusts to her new empty nest status. Fun, but not sure I would characterize it as realistic. But hey, I'm not single so I'll leave that for others to judge. Let's just say, sex figures prominently in this story. I wondered if the author took the title "Mrs. Fletcher" from the reference in [b:The Graduate|71047|The Graduate (The Graduate, #1)|Charles Webb|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1403023709s/71047.jpg|1630939] to "Mrs. Robinson".

At any rate, this book was good, page-turning fun, a bit provocative and very witty in a satirical way. Not so light as to be boring, but also readers shouldn't expect some kind of literary masterwork. A good summer or beach read. ( )
