The tenth novel featuring Sullivan's dynamic duo Royce and Hadrian, rogues for hire, known as Riyria (Elvish for “two.”) A wealthy merchant (Gabriel Winter) hires them to seek retribution for the presumed death of his daughter, Genny, who married the Duke of Rochelle (Leo), and has not been heard from in weeks. Genny is smart and resourceful, and has ideas about how to improve lives in Rochelle. Meanwhile, there is major social strife there, led by the mir and the dwarves. I found the book much slower than normal for the first half, as Hadrian and Royce are trying to find out whether Genny is alive or dead, with Hadrian the eternal optimist thinking alive and Royce the pessimist thinking dead. Rochelle is packed, with nobles abounding as a new king is to be chosen, and the underclasses are seeking retribution for their social plights, including an excellent twist on a famed creature of mythology. It seemed to me that there were too many POVs, including Genny's, somewhat spoiling the mystery of her disappearance, and yet, she was a solid character, except for her massive insecurity. Mercator was another strong female lead, and I liked Sullivan's afterword, tying together a number of matters, including the Duke and Duchess's assistance rendered to the duo in the original Riyria series. ( ) The adventure of Royce and Hadrian continues as they go on a rescue mission that has its own supply of surprises. This book is a step up from the first two books in Riyria Chronicles, but The Death of Dulgath is still a better written novel in my opinion. This story was interesting and engaging. It is filled with the expected banter from Royce and Hadrian. It did not pull me in as much as I was hoping and the writing slipped every now and then. Overall I'm glad I read the two Riyria series as they were an easy, fast paced, and enjoyable journey. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

"A daughter vanishes. Two rogues are paid a fortune to find her. It isn't enough. When Gabriel Winter's daughter mysteriously disappears and is presumed dead, the wealthy whiskey baron seeks revenge. Having lived in Colnora during the infamous Year of Fear, he hires the one man he knows can deliver a bloody retribution - the notorious Duster. Ride with Royce and Hadrian as the cynical ex-assassin and idealistic ex-mercenary travel to a mysterious old-world city filled with nobles claiming descent from the imperial aristocracy. Riyria's job appears easy: discover what happened to the missing duchess and, if she lives, bring her home... if not, punish those responsible. But nothing is simple in the crowded, narrow, mist-filled streets of Rochelle, where more than one ancient legend lurks.
