"From Facebook's COO and Wharton's top-rated professor, the #1New York Timesbest-selling authors ofLean InandOriginals:a powerful, inspiring, and practical book about building resilience and moving forward after life's inevitable setbacks. After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. "I was in 'the void,'" she writes, "a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe." Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build. Option B combines Sheryl's personal insights with Adam's eye-opening research on finding strength in the face of adversity. Beginning with the gut-wrenching moment when she finds her husband, Dave Goldberg, collapsed on a gym floor, Sheryl opens up her heart--and her journal--to describe the acute grief and isolation she felt in the wake of his death. But Option B goes beyond Sheryl's loss to explore how a broad range of people have overcome hardships including illness, job loss, sexual assault, natural disasters, and the violence of war. Their stories reveal the capacity of the human spirit to persevere. and to rediscover joy. Resilience comes from deep within us and from support outside us. Even after the most devastating events, it is possible to grow by finding deeper meaning and gaining greater appreciation in our lives. Option B illuminates how to help others in crisis, develop compassion for ourselves, raise strong children, and create resilient families, communities, and workplaces. Many of these lessons can be applied to everyday struggles, allowing us to brave whatever lies ahead. Two weeks after losing her husband, Sheryl was preparing for a father-child activity. "I want Dave," she cried. Her friend replied, "Option A is not available," and then promised to help her make the most of Option B. We all live some form of Option B. This book will help us all make the most of it"-- "The author's experience with grief after the sudden death of her husband, combined with social science on resilience"--… (mehr)

Yeesh. Some good content, and she tries really hard to understand the plight of the little people, but it is simply too difficult to be in a position of such privilege and then offer sound advice to the rest of us on how to grieve.

Additionally, I don't think she is trying to name drop throughout - being a successful executive at two of the largest of tech companies - but the folks she can lean on are not in the same position to offer support as normal people would have access to.

I'm truly saddened for her loss, and I wish her the best in her life, but the detachment from reality is too much for me. ( )

Wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but saw her interviewed on Ellen and thought the book sounded interesting. And it damn well was! It was also very emotional and heartfelt, all the while being very informational but in a way that makes you want to keep reading. Not one of those sterile “this study says this, and that study says that...” I am very glad I picked this up, and will keep passing it around, my mom has it now. You don’t need to have experienced a recent death like the author to appreciate the sentiments in this book, you just have to have an interest in human life. ( )

Though I heard of it right after publication, I got to pick up this book recently after a close friend left us.

It's such a difficult time, and we've been exhausted even after 3 weeks. Meanwhile we got some advice from friends and the community, while when searching online I find this book again.

It tries to deal with more than any single person's advice, covering almost all (it's likely more than one's expectation) aspects of life as one can imagine: How to consume the grief by oneself (The 5 stages of grief), take care of ppl around one especially the kids, going back to work, no big decisions within one year, etc.

THANK YOU for such a comprehensive book. ( )

I've been meaning to read this book for some time, but I'm glad I read it when I did. It is a good mix of sincere, vulnerable, personal experience and data-based advice. Well written, quick read, with an emotional heft.
