Amelia is running away from what she believes she has done, the man who courted her in India turns out to have been a cad and a bounder and already married. Usefully for him his wife has died and he can now pursue her with more vigour, however he's being quite agressive, so she defends herself with a letter opener and runs from the house covered in his blood, believing she has killed him.

She eventually finds shelter in the apparently deserted house of one Sir Edward Gray, who has shut himself off from the world after a tragic fire that took the lives of his wife and child, he's consumed by the grief and has pushed away as many people as he can, reducing his staff to a housekeeper who visits occasionally. Amelia blows a wildness through his life that he can't ignore.

I like how both characters needed each other to help them with their traumas and that they both had things to teach each other. ( )
