Fiction. Literature. Romance. HTML:Portland, Oregon, is one of the hottest cities in America. Just ask all the hard-working men sweating it up behind the counters of the restaurants, boutiques, and cafés all over town . . .

Newly clean and sober, Todd's taken a shine to his job at Portland's most talked about bakery. It's not just the delicious desserts they sell, but the tasty treats who keep walking through the door. That certainly includes Kendall Rose, a wedding planner with eyes the color of brown sugar and skin to match. Todd doesn't try to hide his attraction to Kendall's elegant confidence and unique style, even as he worries about exposing the secrets of his past.

For Kendall, the attention is just part of the anything-goes Portland he's grown to love. But he's still looking for that special someone who will embrace all of himâ??including his gender fluidity. So he takes a chance and asks Todd to be his partner in a dance class leading to a fundraiser. When the music starts and he takes Todd in his arms, Kendall is shocked at how good it feels. Turns out taking the lead for once isn't a mistake. In fact, it might be time to take the next step and follow his heart . . .

Todd and Kendall get to know one another when they are thrust together for dance classes. Todd took dance lessons as a kid. Kendall is taking lessons so they do not embarrass their mother at her firm's charity event. The more time they spend together, the more attracted they become. Will something permanent happen between them?

I liked this story. I liked Kendall. He's genderqueer and flamboyant. Todd has had a hard life and is quieter and more serious. He lives with his grandmother because of his past. I liked watching the two get closer. They do have insecurities because of exes. I was a litle afraid they could not surmount their problems, but they work it out.

I look forward to reading the rest of the series. ( )

This is a sweet story, and not just because Todd works in a bakery. I loved both characters. Todd's gone through a lot to get where he is when Kendall notices him, and he is understandably wary of anything upsetting his balance now. Kendall's an emotionally stable fem guy who's out of a bad relationship and happy to just coast. Their ups & downs are all character-driven, which is perfect. Though I was planning to give five stars, I found both the last chapter ending and the epilogue ending too abrupt, as if the words were tied in a sloppy bow. Albert's usually better with these last few sentences. I was surprised. ( )

Danced Close is the sixth book in the ‘Portland Heat’ series. It’s also the third book in the second book set, if that’s not confusing enough for you. In this story, we learn more about Todd, who is an assistant at the local bakery, and Kendall Rose, a wedding planner.

This story is slightly different in that it’s told from both Todd’s and Kendall’s pov. The previous two books were single pov. I liked the dual pov in this one. Each of the characters had distinct voices and the author did a good job of indicating the pov changes.

Todd is reticent and insecure. His past has scarred him in many ways. He’s an ex-addict who’s also HIV . He’s afraid to take risks because he doesn’t believe he’s capable or that he’s good enough. He believes he isn’t worthy of someone like Kendall even though he desperately wants to be. Kendall is poised, elegant, confident on the outside, and genderqueer. He’s attracted to Todd because Todd accepts who Kendall is, no questions about how he dresses or behaves. I liked the way the author gradually had the characters grow closer together through the dance lessons.

One thing I didn’t like about this book was I felt like I was being lectured throughout it. There were monologues upon monologues by both Todd and Kendall, but especially Kendall, about him being genderqueer and how he was treated. I felt like I was constantly being told to, ‘Look! Look! This genderqueer topic is important! Pay attention.’ I grew annoyed at the repetition. Since Todd wasn’t bothered by who Kendall was, then Todd’s behavior around Kendall would’ve indicated that very acceptance. There’s no need to lecture about it. That’s what bothered me most about the book, the constant preaching about Kendall being genderqueer and how people should behave.

As with the other two books in this book set, the author brings in her trademark, ‘one guy submissive, one guy dominant’ thrown in. I find that particular repetitious stereotyping in this author’s books disappointing.

One thing I wished the author had written more about, was the dance party that Kendall and Todd attended. They took the dance class specifically for that party. The author never talked about how the dancing went, just a little bit of the warm-up. I was disappointed in the lack of follow through after the constant shadow of the party in the background of the dance classes.

And before I forget, the cover. Neither person looks like how Kendall dresses in the story. I dislike covers that don't bother to match the characters.

In the end, I liked the characters’ distinct voices and the dance storyline. However, I very much disliked the genderqueer lecture throughout Danced Close. If it wasn’t for the constant preaching, I’d give this book a higher rating, but instead I can only give this story 3 Stars.

It was so great to see Todd come with his own book. After seeing him mentioned briefly in Baked Fresh, seeing him sober and doing well is awesome. Kendall is a genderqueer wedding planner. I loved how Todd was so accepting of Kendall, but we still saw the everyday struggles that Kendall goes through. It made me appreciate Todd's acceptance more. I also appreciated how Kendall treated Todd with respect and handled his HIV positivity. This was a great addition to the series. I loved seeing a bunch of the other couples as well. ( )

This book was too short and I felt like problems were solved too quickly as a result. We didn't really get to see a lot of growth or the path to falling in love with these characters. ( )
