The book starts off when Coretta Scott King was an adult and after her husband, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot. In class, we talked about how sometimes books like to grab the reading in the beginning to get them to keep reading and if they start with “so-and-so was born on…” then some people might not want to continue to read the book. Therefore, they start off with something interesting and kind of fast pace to grab the reader’s attention. After they talk about how she went to the march even though her husband was dead, they go back to the beginning and talk about her childhood. The book then back tracks even farther when it talks about her father and how he was able to start his own company around the time she was born. Coretta was a hard working person, even as a child, she started working in the garden when she was 6 years old. She enjoyed working outside because she was a tomboy. Her family was very invested in their faith. They walked 4 miles to go to Sunday School. She went to school at the age of 5 where there were only two teachers for over 100 students. She had to walk a far distance to school, because she couldn’t ride the bus to school. She was a very strong person and fought for herself and others. Her parents were able to big a bigger house, so Coretta was now able to go to a better school. Her house and her father’s business was burned down. Even though her family was treated badly, they never lost hope. Her father even turned one of his old trucks into a school bus so African American children didn’t have to walk to school. Coretta was a very good student and very smart because she was in the gifted program. She graduated high school and went off to college where she met Martin Luther King Jr. They eventually fell in love, but she wasn’t sure she wanted to get married, because being married in the 1950s; women had to choose between marriage and a career. She was able to have both. The couple was very supportive of each other and helped each other out in their endeavors. After they had one of their children, their house was bombed. They were having a hard time standing up for what was right. Martin was arrested a couple of times and he even ended up in the hospital. Even though they were both scared, they continued to push for equal rights. After Martin was shot and died, Coretta continued with his work and wanted to do more. She is a very inspiring woman that was able to have both a career and a family. ( )
