The Spanish poet Pedro Salinas is a member of that group of brilliant and original poets called the Generation of '27, a group which includes Rafael Alberti, Jorge Guill n, Luis Cernuda, Vincente Aleixandre, and Frederico Garc a Lorca. First published as La voz a ti debida in Madrid in 1933, Salinas' sequence of seventy poems is his most famous work, and is thought by many to be the best book of love poetry written in this century. Willis Barnstone's translation makes it available as a whole for the first time in English. As part of Spain's vanguard movement, Salinas believed in reviving elements from earlier eras, as is demonstrated by a title such as Raz n de amor (from the medieval Sermon of Love), as well as Largo Lamento and La voz a ti debida (from the Renaissance poet Garcilaso de la Vega). Salinas shows a natural affinity with the intricate objectivity of the baroque poet G ngora, and continues the Spanish mystical tradition while reaching the metaphysical through human love. And though he learned much from earlier eras, he is also very much of this century, as is seen in his imagery of typewriters, telephones, and car radiators, all deftly handled through a variety of poetic moods. In fact, few modern poets have so discerningly employed the external data of our experience as transformed though the emotions and imagination. For Salinas "Telegraph wires carry kisses." He is by turns playful, ironic, sentimental, and despairing, leading us through love's sense of amazement, humor, tragedy. Salinas' confessional persona speaks with extraordinary power, and the poems operate both individually and cumulatively. Willis Barnstone's translation captures the changing tones of the poet's internal journey, giving us a deep sense of the variety and poignancy found in the original. La voce a te dovuta fa parte delle letture sperimentali: invece di leggere sempre libri che penso mi piacciano, questa volta ne ho preso uno che normalmente eviterei. Le biblioteche servono anche a questo.

L'esperimento non è del tutto riuscito, ma poteva andare peggio. Partiamo da ciò che non mi ha convinto: La voce a te dovuta è il frutto del periodo di maturità poetica di Salinas (1933-1938) ed è incentrato sul sentimento d'amore, visto come trampolino per “l'oltre”. L'autore, infatti, considera la realtà imperfetta, da trascendere per andare oltre il tangibile, dove i due amanti, cadute le maschere, si riconosceranno per ciò che sono veramente.

Sì, tutto molto bello, ma io non sono una fan di Platone e del suo idealismo. Quindi tutto questo sospirar d'amanti pronti a ritrovarsi nel mondo delle idee, tutti contenti di amarsi all'ennesima potenza, mi ha lasciato per lo più indifferente – e, dopo un po', ha iniziato pure ad annoiarmi.

Tuttavia, sono rimasta molto affascinata dalla struttura molto particolare del poema. Si tratta, infatti, di un insieme di poesie tra loro indipendenti, ma unite dal medesimo tema, l'amore, e da strutture parallelistiche, che possono essere veri e propri refrain o corrispondenze più o meno evidenti.

Ora, poiché le singole poesie non sembrano seguire un ordine logico o cronologico, si potrebbe pensare di leggere una qualunque raccolta di poesie; tuttavia, il tema dell'amore e l'inserimento di moduli ricorrenti le rendono a tutti gli effetti parti di un poema. L'effetto finale è quello di una diversità omogenea che ho apprezzato molto. ( )

(continua)...Si sragiona, ci si parla addosso, ci invaghisce di un topos letterario, si idealizza, si sparano scemenze.
Mi immagino 'sta povera crista che mentre sente queste castronerie esagerate sull'amore a momenti si scompiscia dalle risate, a momenti ride, a momenti dice tra se e sé "questa me la segno!".
Salinas ha inventiva, ma di tutto questo straparlare di Ammore non c'era alcun bisogno. Almeno secondo me. Amare è un'altra cosa, per me, rispetto a quella descritta in questi versi. Amare deve essere prosa... ;-)
