"From the birth of the Republican Party to the Confederacy's first convention, the Underground Railroad to the Emancipation Proclamation, the Battle of Gettysburg to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Bill O'Reilly's Legends and Lies: The Civil War reveals the amazing and often little known stories behind the battle lines of America's bloodiest war and debunks the myths that surround its greatest figures, including Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, General Robert E. Lee, Frederick Douglass, Stonewall Jackson, John Singleton Mosby, Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, John Wilkes Booth, William Tecumseh Sherman, and more. An epic struggle between the past and future, the Civil War sought to fulfill the promise that "all men are created equal." It freed an enslaved race, decimated a generation of young men, ushered in a new era of brutality in war, and created modern America. Featuring archival images, eyewitness accounts, and beautiful artwork that further brings the history to life, The Civil War is the action-packed and ultimate follow-up to the #1 bestsellers The Patriots and The Real West"--… (mehr)

It was good but didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know. Would recommend to someone just starting to study the civil war as a good jumping off point to more detailed books. ( )

LEGENDS AND LIES THE CIVIL WAR is part of BILL O'REILLY'S LEGENDS SERIES.

The book takes an in depth view, complete with photos and illustrations of the CIVIL WAR. Mr.O'Reilly's love of history is shown in this edition .

As a lover of the study not only history but the Civil War I found information in the book even I did not know, along with reproductions of photo's and drawings of the war. Excellent book, well researched and well written. ( )

Another in Bill O'Reilly's history light series. Again, I enjoyed it. That being said I have to admit this is by far the most superficial of the books in the series that I have read. What they were trying to do in 340 pages is simply impossible considering the depth, complexity, personalities involved, personal relationships and subtle nuances of the Civil War. The Civil War is far more that just a series of battles. It is probably one of the most complex complicated conflicts in history in that the impacts have been, and still are, far reaching and literally ingrained in every aspect of American life; changes we accept today as part of our lives but rooted and hidden back in our history. It was the point in history where a conflict made the transition from primitive technology and became the embryonic catalysis of modern warfare and ultimately the world of today.

What they have accomplished satisfactorily is to give a good synopsis hitting the high points and critical junctures; in this respect this is a very good book for the average person who would like some understanding and insight into this critical period and its impact on the evolution of the American experience.

Would recommend this for anyone who has even a rudimentary interest in understanding a complicated period on both American and world history. ( )

As much studying as I have done about the Civil War, I learned a lot. I listened to the audio book and it was well written, well read and captivating. ( )

I am not certain what all the LIES in this book are....I do know for a fact....unlike the authors....Abner Doubleday did NOT invent baseball! The book is still very interesting and enjoyable....I just wish so-called historians would get history right! ( )
