Excerpt from The Rise of the Spanish Empire in the Old World and in the New, Vol. 1: The Middle Ages The signs and abbreviations used to indicate the different relationships are taken from his book: any doubts as to their meaning may be cleared up by consulting his preface. The maps have been constructed, with much care, from a number of different atlases. Those of Spruner and Lane Poole have laid me under the deepest obligations, but there are several sites, routes and boundaries, which I have had to work out, unaided, from the texts.
