Outstanding account of the British civil war which led to the Protectorate of Cromwell and prefigured much in American history and culture. ( ) 1137 The King's War 1641-1647, by C. V. Wedgwood (read 28 Oct 1971) This covers the period from 1641 till 1647, and was quite interesting withal. John Pym died Dec 8, 1643, and so did not see his triumph. Prince Rupert, brother of the Elector Palatine, and son-in-law of the "winter king" of Bohemia and nephew of Charles I is a very likeable person and the ablest of the Royalist generals. In fact, when the King turned on him my dismay over the King's loss lessened. Montrose, who fought so well and spectacularly for the King in Scotland, I was happy to see escape to Norway . The King, as 1647 starts, has been turned over to the English. The next volume takes him to the gallows. Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

The King's War takes the story of the great rebellion from 1642-1647, from the arrest of the five members to the dramatic moment when the Scots surrendered the captive King Charles to the English. During these years the great battles of Marston Moor and Baseby Wree fought, Rupert emerged as the King's chief general and Montrose conducted his brilliant but forlorn campaign in Scotland. On the parliamentary side the death of Pym was followed by the rise of Cromwell, both in parliament and in the field. the new model army, which won the war for parliament, was largely his creation. It was merely an army but a new social force in English life. Here for the first time the ordinary people had an organization through which they could make their influence felt on the politics of the nation. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
