In this book, Michael Lloyd sets out a comprehensive analysis and counter-narrative to the neo-liberal market capitalist orthodoxy. He uses Friedrich Hayek, Margaret Thatcher's favourite adviser, as a 'stalking horse'. The aim is to argue against not only neo-liberalism, but also its philosophical and political antecedents deriving from John Locke and from Adam Smith, but reflected in Hayek and other neo-liberal advocates to the present day. A new social enlightenment is required, one which sweeps away the foundations of the liberal individualist enlightenment which persist today in the form of neo-liberal, market economics and its philosophical underpinning. In so doing it will also attack the false prospectus of Trump, Le Pen, Farage, and other populist nationalists. However, it will also challenge some of the shibboleths of the Left such as its naive anti-elitism, and its current preoccupation with identity politics rather than class politics.… (mehr)

The Great Transformation: Politische und ökonomische Ursprünge von Gesellschaften und Wirtschaftssystemen von Karl Polanyi (M_Clark)
M_Clark: Polanyi's classic work also attacks the thinking of Hayek and the neo-liberals but he does it in a way that is much more readable. That said, Polanyi does not take as comprehensive a look at neo-liberalism as does Michael Lloyd.

Neo-liberalism has become the accepted wisdom in western political and economic thinking. The application of neo-liberalist thoughts has, however, met with less than perfect success. As a result, several books have been published criticizing neo-liberal thinking. In contrast to those other books, Michael Lloyd's work takes a deep and comprehensive look at the complete philosophy of neo-liberalism, focusing on the works of Hayek. As such the book is a useful contribution to modern thinking.

Unfortunately, the book is difficult to read and a challenge to understand. First of all, the style of the book is more like a plodding doctoral dissertation than a passionate argument against the neo-liberals. The author would have improved the book if he had relegated many of the criticisms of specific thinkers to the footnotes. Second, many of the chapters require a high level of knowledge of topics ranging from epistemology to economic philosophy. A wide reading of Hayek is also necessary. Finally, the book has numerous typos, grammatical errors and missing words. it is also poorly formatted as an e-book with features like the Table of Contents not being supported. ( )
