The Story of Us is a love conquers all, second chance romance read. The leads have been through years of torture. There's lots of manipulation from forces outside of their relationship and also some plain ole crappy luck. Although, they have been around the people equivalent of poisonous snakes, both have good hearts. Both are dealing with physical and mental scars and keeping secrets, and they will do anything to protect each other. Eli and Shelby miss the relationship they once had, but they have to get everything out into the open to salvage what they have. This book is an emotional rollercoaster with some unexpected twists.

Lots of angst, misunderstandings and lack of communication. A good story.

Very well written and quite emotional story. ( )

Lieutenant Elijah James was a prisoner of war for 1,843 days, as the blurb shows. How tragic. Eli had an unspeakable experience during all of those years. What is worse is his best friend Rylan died during their capture. When Eli returns home, it is to go the one woman who could heal his broken soul, Shelby Eubanks. They had a love, a special love that he is desperate to rekindle.

However, when Eli sees Shelby again, it is apparent that she is ecstatic that he is alive. But from what he can tell, she certainly isn't the same woman. In fact, in some ways she seems more broken than he is. Also, she is involved with a man named Landry. What is worse is that Shelby is under her mother's thumb, as her mother treats her abominably. Eli really hopes he can reach Shelby's heart to let her know that he never stopped loving her.

Shelby has her reasons for trying to keep her distance from Eli. But, oh her heart. Has she ever stopped loving him? No doubt the challenges they shared when they were young pale in comparison to what they will face now. Her problems with her mother are getting even worse. But, there seems like there is nothing that she can do.

How heartbreaking! The Story of Us is an apropos title. It is a story of two people getting a second chance, and who have to move mountains to find their way back to one another. Both Eli and Shelby have to communicate and while reading this story from dual purposes it was very touching. And how the author deals with Eli's after effects from his time while captured was very emotional. Then there were the letters that Eli wrote to Shelby. Definitely shed a few tears then. This dramatic story by Tara Sivec was a good read and I look forward to reading much more by her.

Let me start off by saying... Fuck Tara Sivec and her fucking feelings! If you follow my reviews, you know I am not an emotional reader. I RARELY cry. I RARELY feel all emotional reading books. Of coarse Tara just had to break me with this book!

I really think that the above should be enough said, but I think I should just talk a little more about something. Shouldn't I? Maybe I shouldn't...

I VOW that Eli and Shelby's story is going to rip you apart and sooth you over and over again. The real story of their shared past comes out little by little. And each time, your heart will break a little more for these characters. My emotions were all over this place throughout this story.

I feel like I should just write paragraph after paragraph about this story, but you know I won't. You know I will not give you anything other than the important things you need to know. (If you want more than that, I am sure you can find a million reviews telling you the whole story or a rewrite of the synopsis masked as a review elsewhere.) Really, in case you haven't caught on. THIS STORY WILL BREAK ALL OF YOUR EMOTIONS and you will love and loath every single second of it! ( )
