2nd book didn't disappoint and it totally ended NO WHERE NEAR WHERE I EXPECTED. ( )

The plot was great but the voice narration was stellar. The blending of certain characters was handled so amazingly. ( )

THUNDERHEAD, by Neal Shusterman, is the second book in the Arc of the Scythe series. It primarily follows former scythe apprentices Citra and Rowan, who have grown into two completely different Scythes and yet continue to be connected and ever drawn to each other. The scythedom world is at the precipice of change; there is a growing division between the traditional scythedom ways and a new world order that wants to modernize the scythe rules. Meanwhile, the Thunderhead, an almost all-knowing, omniscient presence that is sworn not interfere with the ways of the scythe, finds ways to "influence" matters that it feels could benefit the world. The division between traditional and new world comes to inevitable conflict that will change society forever.
Shusterman writes epic tales that are exciting, full of colorful characters, and have lots of surprises along the way. The reader can't help but pull for both Citra and Rowan because of their spirit and drive to do what each of them thinks is the right thing to do. The rest of the cast of characters are wonderfully detailed and quite interesting to read about. There is also a unique style in Shusterman's crafting of the book: there is a feeling of anxiety, almost dread, that something else is about to happen on every page and yet there is really only a few shocking reveals throughout the book. That dread keeps the reader engaged and enthralled at all times, wondering when the next bomb will drop. I enjoyed THUNDERHEAD a lot and can't wait to read the third book in the series. ( )

Summary: This book is the sequel to Scythe. In a world where humans no longer die from illness or accident the Scythe must keep the population under control. Only they can decide who lives and who dies.

My rating: 2/5

I really loved the first book. I gave it a 4/5. This book started off fine. It introduced a new character which I didn't quite like as much as the characters from book one and he got more page time than the returning characters but that was a small complaint. Also, the book focused less on philosophizing what death meant to humans, as book one had, and more about the nature of omnipotent knowledge and power. I didn't like that as much as book one but I still really enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book.

Around that halfway mark a certain thing happens that felt like a cheap trick. A thing happened that we as readers hadn't really been told could happen before and the villains in the book involved pretty much said that while it was possible it wasn't strictly legal so I shrugged and moved on. If that had been the only cheap thing in the story I think I could have let it go. It was annoying but I was having a good time.

Then, during the last 75 pages the whole book went off the rails in my opinion. I won't spoil what happened but the plot took some turns I wasn't expecting and that I really didn't like and that I felt ruined the book for me.

I do not think I will be continuing this series because my friend told me if I didn't some of the surprises in Thunderhead that the final book has similar things in it.

I almost wish I'd have just read Scythe and not bothered with Thunderhead.

While I highly recommend Scythe to readers who enjoy dystopia I cannot recommend this sequel. ( )
