"On Thursday 17 August, 1860, wealthy widow Mary Emsley was found dead in her own home, killed by a blow to the back of her head. What followed was a murder case that gripped the nation. A veritable locked room mystery, there were an abundance of suspects, from disgruntled step children concerned about their inheritance and a spurned admirer repeatedly rejected by the widow, to a trusted employee, former police officer and spy, until he was sent to prison for robbery. During the police investigation there were several twists and dramatic discoveries, as suspects sought to incriminate each other and fresh evidence was discovered at the last minute. Eventually, it led to a public trial dominated by surprise revelations and shock witnesses, before culminating with one of the final public executions at Newgate. Years later the case caught the attention of Arthur Conan Doyle, who was convinced that an innocent man had been convicted and executed for the crime. But Conan Doyle was never able to find the real murder." --Publisher description.… (mehr)

I fear the popularity of this book may suffer from poor publicity. The silhouette of Conan Doyle on the cover and subtitle "The case that Conan Doyle couldn't solve!" is misleading - Doyle's involvement throughout this novel is minimal and has no bearing on this true crime novel.

I found the extreme attention to historical detail stifling at times. Halfway through the book and we hadn't even made it to trial yet!!! Whilst no doubt exceptionally well researched and accurate I wish it had been confined to a page or two and not pages upon pages spent on tangential links to the key players...

For lovers of historical crime novels - this is for you..... ( )

Lots of fascinating detail about an East End murder in 1860 London - a man was hung after a two day trial of circumstantial evidence but the murderer was likely someone else - McKay gives a possibility. ( )

'All these details I observed afterwards. At present my attention was centred upon the single, grim, motionless figure which lay stretched upon the boards, with vacant, sightless eyes staring up at the discoloured ceiling.'

The creator of Sherlock Holmes understood the streets of London as a dark, gothic maze.
Her neighbours never seemed to wonder if the sharp-tongued old lady might be lonely.
