Prequel novellas are often problematic as the plot is underdeveloped and the characters one-dimensional. This is not the case here as Cynthia Eden has provided an excellent introduction to her new Killer Instincts series. Samantha is a very intriguing heroine and the hints at her troubling past only whet the reader's appetite for more. While Blake is not as fleshed out, the possibility of something more than a partnership with Samantha is stimulating and makes one want to see how their relationship will develop. The serial killer investigation is the focus of the book and it is a well-written thriller with a satisfying climax and resolution. Overall, a short yet gripping gripping story and I am eager to read the full length novel, especially after the evocative cliffhanger.
