Yoomi's older siblings tease her because she doesn't like spicy kimchi and call her a baby. She's determined to prove she isn't a baby ... but the problem is, kimchi is just too spicy for her! Can her halmoni help her find a way to reconcile these two issues?

This is a cute book tackling a common problem for many younger siblings -- feeling left out by older siblings but not quite having the developmental capacity to engage fully in their activities. What's nice here is how the grandmother helps make everything right so everyone can be involved and happy.

This title is part of a loose series featuring Yoomi, the anthropomorphic cat who is the main character here. Although the characters are all cats, it's clear that the book is steeped in Korean culture, which makes this title a good option for libraries, classrooms, and homes looking to diversify their bookshelves and reflect as many cultures as possible. Cute book, but the idea that it's ok to call someone a baby because they don't like the same things as you, is never challenged. Yumi learns to like kimchi, but what if she didn't? Everyone is entitled to their personal likes and dislikes. ( )

My students enjoyed learning about kimchi and loved when the little girl tried to eat it with other foods she liked. ( )

Summary: This book is about a cat who doesn’t like kimchi. Her brothers tease her and call her a baby for not liking it. Finally, her grandma makes a kimchi pancake, which the little kitty does like.
Opinion: This book was cute, I love a good cat book! I think it’s a good lesson on trying new things. Maybe I should even try Kimchi! ( )
