Fiction. Mystery. HTML:Iconic, tough-but-tender Boston PI Spenser delves into the black market art scene to investigate a decades-long unsolved crime of dangerous proportions.
The heist was legendary, still talked about twenty years after the priceless paintings disappeared from one of Boston's premier art museums. Most thought the art was lost forever, buried deep, sold off overseas, or, worse, destroyed as incriminating evidence. But when paint chips from the most valuable piece stolen, Gentlemen in Black by a Spanish master, arrives at the desk of a Boston journalist, the museum finds hope and enlists Spenser's help.
Soon the cold art case thrusts Spenser into the shady world of black market art dealers, aged Mafia bosses, and old vendettas. A five-million-dollar-reward by the museum's top benefactor, an aged, unlikable Boston socialite, sets Spenser and pals Vinnie Morris and Hawk onto a trail of hidden secrets, jailhouse confessions, and decades-old murders.
Set against the high-society art scene and the low-life back alleys of Boston, this is classic Spenser doing what he does best.

I have enjoyed all of the previous Ace Atkin Spenser novels. This one, not so much. The voice is still there but honestly I couldn't give a hoot about the mystery. I found it uninteresting and lackluster. This was closer to a 2.5 star. I still enjoy hearing Spenser talk but the book lacked any depth. I hope this is a one off and not the beginning of the end for me and Spenser. ( )

Robert B. Parker’s Old Black Magic; a Spenser Novel. Ace Atkins. 2018, I remember how much Jim and I loved The Godwulf Manuscrpt, the first Spenser novel. I found it at MPL when Jim was recovering from his first broken leg! He was one of the few novelists we got in hardback. Atkins was chosen by the Spenser estate to continue the series, and he does a good job. In this one, Spenser is hired by a museum to find 3 stolen masterpieces. Susan and Pearl are here, but Hawk is not. As usual, great descriptions of food and drink and Boston! ( )

Mr. Atkins decidedly makes things more difficult for Spenser than Mr. Parker did in later years. I like it. ( )

Spencer with a little help from Vinny and the gang track down and almost recover stolen painting from the Winthrop Museum.
Atkins is no Robert Parker, but sometimes he's closer.
More violence than usual ... ( )

This installment of Robert B. Parkers Spenser series has not much going for it. The plot about stolen art is listless and Spencer teaming up with Vinny Morris lacks the chemistry that Spencer and Hawk have. Save your money. ( )
