"Mirage is full of characters who feel like they existed long before the story began, and a rich world that is as beautiful as it is cruel. Somaiya Daud is a rare talent. A smart, romantic, exciting debut." â??Veronica Roth, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Divergent and Carve the Mark

A stunning epic fantasy audiobook inspired by the author's Moroccan heritage about a poor girl who must become the body double of a princess of a ruthless empire hailed as "a rich, dazzling, powerful debut" by Tahereh Mafi, the New York Times author of the Shatter Me series

In a world dominated by the brutal Vathek empire, eighteen-year-old Amani is a dreamer. She dreams of what life was like before the occupation; she dreams of writing poetry like the old-world poems she adores; she dreams of receiving a sign from Dihya that one day, she, too, will have adventure, and travel beyond her isolated home.

But when adventure comes for Amani, it is not what she expects: she is kidnapped by the regime and taken in secret to the royal palace, where she discovers that she is nearly identical to the cruel half-Vathek Princess Maram. The princess is so hated by her conquered people that she requires a body double, someone to appear in public as Maram, ready to die in her place.

As Amani is forced into her new role, she can't help but enjoy the palace's beautyâ??and her time with the princess' fiancé, Idris. But the glitter of the royal court belies a world of violence and fear. If Amani ever wishes to see her family again, she must play the princess to perfection...because one wrong move could lead to her death.

More praise for Mirage:

"Daud is a masterful storyteller. Mirage gives readers an exquisitely wrought world with deft characters, death-defying stakes, and an aching romance. Bound to linger in your dreams." â?? Roshani Chokshi, New York Times bestselling author of The Star-Touched Queen

"MIRAGE reads as an impossible trick of the light, a feather that carves words into stone, a banquet of longing and loss. Every page comes roaring to life in a way that overwhelms and transforms you. This isn't a debut novel so much as an heirloom, and the work of a master storyteller." â?? Margaret Stohl, #1 New York Times bestselling author Beautiful Creatures & Black Widow: Forever Red

"With its breathtaking worldbuilding and characters who grabbed me from the first page, Mirage is by turns thrilling and ruminative, sexy and heartbreaking. Somaiya Daud has written a moving and unforgettable debut." â?? Sabaa Tahir, New York Times bestselling author of An Ember in t… (mehr)

It's possibly a mix of this being a debut novel and a YA novel, but I had a hard time getting through this one. Actually, I admit I skimmed parts of it. A lot of prose, and not a lot of plot.

Which is to say, there are full pages of inner thoughts, descriptions, and world-building explanations, but not a whole lot happened. The characters are a little one-dimensional, and for all that the stakes are high, I couldn't bring myself to actually care about what was going on. The tragedies and challenges of the MC and her oppressed people are rehashed a lot, but they never took on life.

And for all that I appreciated the unique cultural elements, the setting felt stiff like a badly written historical fiction novel where time/place are a backdrop rather than lived-in space. I really wish this novel could have worked for me, but it wasn't my cup of tea. ( )

* I got this book for review from the publisher* I gave this book a 3.5 stars for review*

I really did enjoy this book. I felt this book was a super fast pace read. I overall enjoyed it, but I did not feel as connected to the characters and the world as I wanted too. I thought the world was intreasting. I really thought the dynamics between the princess and her double and also liked the hints of romance. I did enjoy the end and I like how the book was structured. It just did not wow me. I will def be checking out book 2!! ( )

I received a free ebook copy of Mirage from NetGalley in exchange for feedback and an honest review.

3.5 stars.

Mirage is well written, with gorgeous, imaginative settings in the faraway Vathek empire. Amani is kidnapped on her majority night, an event in which she receives facial tattoos significant to her culture, because she is identical to the king's daughter Maram. Maram, who is hated for being of mixed blood and having a very harsh personality, requires a body double -- Amani. As time passes, Amani learns to act as Maram, taking her place at public events and fooling even the king himself.

This is a book I really wanted to like, but it missed the mark in a few spots for me. I could not understand Amani's soft spot for Maram, who was downright abusive to her, or the romance between her and Maram's fiance, and these elements left me rolling my eyes at a number of points. On the other hand, I loved the lush descriptions of a Moroccan inspired setting and Amani's intrinsic appreciation for poetry. Mirage is absolutely worth a read, if not precisely my cup of tea. ( )

U.S.-born Somaiya Daud has written a fantasy with an Arabian flavor, and while the characters are strong, the story seems like one told before. Kidnapped from her home during her coming-of-age ceremony, Amani is taken to the royal palace of the Vathek Empire. Her crime is that she is nearly identical in appearance to the princess, and she is taught how to act as the princess so she can make appearances in situations where danger is present. The hardest part for Amani is losing her humanity, and it is this element of her character that jeopardizes her role to the princess's betrothed. Of course, nothing good can come from that. Amani agrees to help the rebels while also trying to reform the princess. ( )
