Abstract: This reference work is intended to enable and encourage school systems to prepare for the prevention of eating disorders via classroom instruction, improved detection and referral, and the professional development of school personnel. It includes: facts about the nature and causes of anorexia nervosa and bulimia; an analysis of the sociocultural determinants of eating disorders; interviews with anorexic and bulimic adolescents and their parents; facts about the extent of eating disorders, demographic characteristics of dangerous weight control methods which appear to be the norm among today's adolescents; a list of resource curriculum guides, readings and films on eating disorders; general principles for discussing eating disorders in the classroom; General principles for identifying eating disorders and for referring anorexic and bulimic students to proper services; suggestions for working with the entire school system to educate students and provide referral information; and ways in which teachers can integrate preventive education about eating disoders into basic lessons in important academic subjects. Names and addresses of national eating disorder associations are provided.
