Jeffrey Archer is one of my favorite authors, and this compilation of short stories did not disappoint. All of the stories have a clever twist. An added bonus at the end of the book is a preview of his upcoming novel, Heads You Win, to be released November 2018. ( ) A collection of some 14 short stories by a master story-teller/novelist. Eight of the stories have been inspired by actual events. Two of the stories have 100 words -- exactly. One story has three alternative endings (the author confesses he liked all three -- and presents them for the reader's decision.) Most of the tales have a twist at the end worthy of O. Henry. My favorites among the collection were: "Who Killed the Mayor?" (in which a big-city policeman is sent to a small Italian village to discover who murdered the much-hated mayor), "View of Auvers-sur-Oise" (where a new policeman makes his first collar), "The Road to Damascus" (in which a young schoolmaster discovers the reason behind a dramatic career switch on the part of a classmate), "The Cuckold" (about a man involved in an affair with his best friend's wife), and "The Holiday of a LIfetime" (a distant couple reignites their marriage with a get-rich-quick scheme -- personally, I found Option C the most satisfying of the choices Archer offers). The two 100-word stories are simply amazing: who knew one could devise something so satisfying with such an economy of words? -- Quick, delightful reading. Encore, m'lord! keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
"Find out what happens to the hapless young detective from Naples who travels to an Italian hillside town to find out Who Killed the Mayor? and the pretentious schoolboy in A Road to Damascus, whose discovery of the origins of his father's wealth changes his life in the most profound way. Revel in the stories of the 1930's woman who dares to challenge the men at her Ivy League University in A Gentleman and A Scholar while another young woman who thumbs a lift gets more than she bargained for in A Wasted Hour."--Dust jacket.
