Lol, that was terrible. I got through it in a night, but only because I was hoping there would be something redemptive in it. Alas, no, its alternate title should be "How to Abuse and Terrorize a Really Ridiculous Woman into Marriage in 30 days".

I know that this is one of Howard's earliest novels and it is exemplary of the style that was popular at the time, but really, that was kind of awful. Since I seem to be on a quest to read all of Linda Howard's published novels, at least I can check it off. ( )

4 stars for the angsty oldschoolness but if you're offended by asshat heroes and doormat heroines you'd probably only give it a one. She was absolutely the most frightened wimpy virgin I have ever read about. She practically fainted if he touched the side of her breast. She went into hysterics if he asked to make love to her. He on the other hand, other than reluctantly accepting a no sexually, never paid the slightest attention to what she wanted. I wanted to hit him over the head with a skillet. This book however, is a product of its time, If you're not willing to accept that then just don't read category romance books from the 70s and 80s. ( )

This has been my least favourite book in the Linda Howard ride I've been on. Escapist romance tucked into an adventure usually, such as Prey, Ice and The Woman Left Behind. But no adventure in this. I found it repetitive. How many times did Jessica pout, feel sorry for herself, misinterpret, not explain her feelings - on and on. I only pushed through to the finish because I had a certain faith in the author that Jessica would become more interesting and believable. And then when the good place comes right in the last 5 minutes I found I did not trust it after the countless previous times happiness had fallen apart. Needless to say, I didn't much admire Jessica, and felt I didn't get to know Nikolas, didn't know where he was coming from in his fixation on Jessica.

There are a million books with All That Glitters in the title. I wonder why Linda Howard chose this title - I didn't see the connection in the story.

Just remember that sometimes even with identical titles in the same genre, there will be a few similarities but fascinating differences and each tempts the reader to luxuriate in excitement and enchantment created by the authors' creativity. When Jessica Stanton refuses to vote on her stock options the way Greek billionaire and bully Nikolas Constantinos wishes, he decides to retaliate, until he meets her. The press bestowed the sobriquet “Black Widow” on Jessica because she married a man old enough to be her grandfather, a man who subsequently died and made her very rich. But Jessica doesn’t want wealth; she wants love, which she believes she’s found in Nikolas. Although why she thinks this, will be a mystery to readers since he all but rapes her time and again. As he hounds her and she repels him, readers will see a textbook case of verbal and physical abuse in a tale that epitomizes the worst of late twentieth-century romance. Alas, even Howard’s facile writing can’t save this story about a cruel man, a purportedly strong but weepy doormat heroine, and a ludicrous plot set in glamorous London and on a Greek island. Although this may be Howard’s worst book, libraries may want it to round out their popular Howard collection as she retains her best-seller status as queen of romantic suspense with such worthy titles as Shadow Woman (2013). — Pat Henshaw ( )
