"Nate McHale is a committed family man and a dedicated pediatric cancer specialist. But he has another side, a dark, manipulative persona he has struggled to leave behind in Greystone Lake, the Adirondacks town where he reigned as the untouchable Storm King, a rage-filled teenager who led his devoted group of friends on midnight vigilante raids, wreaking vengeance on those who crossed them. At the center of the circle is wild, beautiful Lucy Bennett, linked forever to Nate by the tragedy that destroyed both their families, and Nate's oldest friend Tom Buck, son of the chief of police, as open and earnest as Nate is veiled. Now a body has been discovered in the deep woods surrounding the town, a body that will lay bare the lies they have all told themselves and reignite the mystery that has haunted the town for fourteen years. And Nate McHale will come home at last, to find the truth--and the man he really is"--… (mehr)

I read Brendan Duffy's debut novel House of Echoes when it was published and blow away. It was such a fabulous story and I couldn't wait to read The Storm King to see if that book would be as good.

The Storm King is about repercussions and consequences. How ones youthful acts can have consequences years later. Nate lost his family when he was young and he and his friends took out their anger on the people that they thought deserved it. He never reflected on what the consequences would be. Not until twelve years later when a body is found and he has to return back to his hometown to see the effect of his action all those years ago.

I found The Storm King to not really grab me the way House of Echoes did. Don't take me wrong, the writing is good and the story is good. It's just not mind-blowing good. There is just not much suspense in the story and I cared very little for the characters. The best part is when Nate sees the bigger picture, how everything is connected. Also, the final confrontation at the end was good.

The Storm King is a book that I wanted to love, but in the end, its story just didn't truly appeal to me. It's a case of good writing, but with a story that just didn't rock my boat.

I want to thank Ballantine Books for providing me with a free copy through Edelweiss for an honest review! ( )

With a narrative that seamlessly weaves between the past and present, The Storm King by Brendan Duffy is an atmospheric mystery that is full of secrets and revenge.

As a teenager, Nate McHale is the lone survivor of a car accident that killed his parents and younger brother. Raised by his beloved Grams, Nate and his close friends, Tommy Buck, Johnny Vanhouten and Owen Liffey set out to extract vengeance against the people they perceive have wronged them. These "Thunder Runs" occur during storms and they run the gamut from subtle to overt vandalism against a number of residents in their small town. With their high school graduation marking the end of their reign of terror, Nate leaves for college and never returns to Greystone Lake following a devastating loss.

In the present, Nate is happily married with a daughter and he has a successful career as a surgeon. Following the stunning discovery of skeletonized remains, Nate returns to his hometown to attend the funeral and quickly learns that his grandmother and his friends are being targeted by vandals. Taken in for questioning about the recovered bones, Nate stumbles onto an astonishing trove of information that he uses to investigate incidents in the present and a heartbreaking loss in his past.

With the flashbacks of Nate's teen years, a shocking portrait of Nate begins to emerge. He and his friends are relentless in their zest for revenge and their pranks are incredibly destructive. It is difficult to feel much sympathy for Nate as the depths of his rage and sly manipulation of his friends are exposed. When the object of his wrath changes focus, he and his friends ensure that anyone who slights them is punished for their "misdeed". The teens act as judge and judge and they do not hesitate to carry out the sentences they impose on their victims.

Upon his return for the funeral, Nate is somewhat surprised by the changes time has wrought upon his friends. He is also uneasy with questions the police chief asks him during an antagonistic interrogation. After he unearths the astounding compilation of data about the graduation night disappearance of someone very dear to him, Nate thinks he knows who is behind the vandalism and why. He is also certain he knows who is responsible for the tragedy that occurred on graduation night but his efforts to investigate are hampered by the worsening hurricane. Will he uncover the truth before it is too late? Will Nate unmask a dark and twisted killer before they strike again?

The Storm King is an engrossing mystery that keeps the pages turning at a blistering pace. Nate is an extremely intriguing character that initially is not easy to like, but gradually becomes a protagonist that readers will root for as he searches for the truth. With the hurricane approaching, the storyline takes on a high degree of urgency as all of the pieces finally begin falling into place. Although readers will most likely be able to accurately narrow down the suspect pool to a handful of likely culprits, Brendan Duffy masterfully keeps the perpetrator's identity tightly under wraps until the adrenaline-laced denouement. I thought that this was a rather interesting book. I have had this one in my review pile for some time but hadn't yet worked it into my reading schedule for one reason or another. I decided to grab the audio and give it a try. I was initially drawn to the book by its description and the mysterious cover. I did enjoy the story and am glad that I finally had the chance to read it.

Nate is at the center of this story and while I liked his character, I was never quite sure if he should be trusted. We see Nate as both a teenager and an adult. As an adult, Nate is a pediatric oncologist and a husband and father. His life seems very upstanding but as I worked my way through the book, it seemed that he had a few things that he might be hiding.

As a child, Nate's family were in an accident at the lake which left his parents and sibling dead. He grew up with his grandmother after the accident and grew close to a group of friends which included his girlfriend, Lucy Bennett. This was one of those books that the more you read the more connected the events in the story seemed to become. Everything seemed to be tied together in one way or another.

As an adult, Nate returns to town when Lucy's remains are found and events from the past are brought to the forefront. The story did keep me guessing and I was never quite sure which direction things might end up going. I really liked the way that the story was laid out giving the reader just enough of both the present and the past to really keep the story moving.

I thought that Jon Lindstrom did a fantastic job with the narration. I believe that this was my first experience with this narration and I have no complaints at all. He did a wonderful job with all of the character voices and I thought that the dialogue flowed nicely. He had a very pleasant voice and I thought that he was able to bring a lot of excitement to the story. I wouldn't hesitate to listen to his work again in the future.

I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this was a well-done mystery that kept me guessing until the very end. It was interesting to see how interconnected the events in the book were and how everything came together in the end. I look forward to reading more of Brendan Duffy.

I received a digital review copy of this book from Random House - Ballantine Books via NetGalley and purchased a copy of the audiobook. ( )

Some authors write books that leave you completely satisfied when you are done reading and eagerly awaiting their next book, whatever the subject. Brendan Duffy is one of those authors. Duffy’s previous book, House of Echoes, was published about three years ago, so the details weren’t that fresh in my mind. But as soon as I saw his name as the author of The Storm King, I knew I wanted to have it as soon as it was released, and I knew I would once again finish with that satisfied feeling. You know when you turn the final page it was time well spent.

The Storm King is mesmerizing from beginning to end. After a body is discovered in Greystone Lake, Nate McHale returns to the hometown he left fourteen years earlier. He is not comfortable there and the tension is palpable. No one is what they seem to be, or what they seemed to be all those years ago. He is estranged from his friends, his old enemies are still around, strangers seem to present danger, and a massive hurricane that almost feels like a character in itself is coming. The story jumps around in time but makes perfect sense. The suspense builds until you can’t turn the pages fast enough.

I highly recommend that you read The Storm King, go back and read House of Echoes, and put Brendan Duffy on your automatic pre-order list. (Note this review was unsolicited; I did not receive a complimentary copy of the book.) ( )
