New and uncollected tales of murder, mischief, magic and madness.Ruth Rendell was an acknowledged master of psychological suspense: these are ten (and a quarter) of her most chillingly compelling short stories, collected here together for the first time.In these tales, a businessman boasts about cheating on his wife, only to find the tables turned. A beautiful country rectory reverberates to the echo of a historical murder. A compulsive liar acts on impulse, only to be lead inexorably to disaster. And a wealthy man finds there is more to his wife's kidnapping than meets the eye.Atmospheric, gripping and never predictable, this is Ruth Rendell at her inimitable best. The stories are: Never Sleep in a Bed Facing a Mirror; A Spot of Folly; The Price of Joy; The Irony of Hate; Digby's Wives; The Haunting of Shawley Rectory; A Drop Too Much; The Thief; The Long Corridor of Time; In the Time of his Prosperity; and Trebuchet.… (mehr)

This is the first time that these stories have been collected together in a fascinating volume. They are not all crime stories and in fact the strongest ones are those that depart from the expected and are all ghost or supernaturally based and have less of a twist in the tale, but still give a great deal of satisfaction. The stories span Rendell’s writing career and make for compelling reading with the contrast between them adding to the interest in discovering the collection. As ever, Rendell’s writing is wholly captivating and the final story comes as a chilling finale

This is an assortment of short stories. They range in length, with the shortest being barely a paragraph - and none the less effective for that. 3 are ghost stories, all contain an element of mystery or suspense. A number gave the impression of being a sketch for a longer novel, the last one, in particular, could be taken in any number of novellistic directions. Most of the stories contain some relationship that is not as it appears, or has been badly misinterpretted on one side or another. There are also unexpected twists in a number of them that turn the judgements and assumptions of the preceeding story on their heads.
This was read by a cast, which at first had me worried. It turned out to be that different stories were narrated by different voices, which actually worked very effectively.
I've not read much Rendell before, but this was quite good going. ( )

No two of Ruth Rendell's short stories are ever alike, although in some cases one or two became the basis of a later novel.

She was obviously fascinated by links with history and elements of the supernatural. Each of the short stories is polished and they are mostly under 20 pages. There are 3 ghost stories in this collection, although one is only a matter of lines long. Most have an unexpected twist.

Highly recommended.
The introduction by Sophie Hannah raises some interesting points. ( )

The Aztecs made paper from tree bark pressed into sheets and coated with white pigment. They had no alphabet, no writing, so they set down their ceremonies, their mythology and their terrible blood rites in glyphs; small, sinister and beautiful pictures in scarlet and gold, ... books or codices.
