Jane Hawk is back again and still out for revenge for the death of her husband. As she climbs higher up the totem to stop them from creating their version of utopia, she begins to wonder how much further she must go. Simon Yegg is a rich and powerful man. He will do anything for his brother, and doesn't ask questions. When Jane appears, he tries to outsmart her and sets up a signal to let his brother Booth Hendrickson know that Jane is with him. But when Jane encounters Booth, could she have met her match. Jessie and Gavin Washington have sworn to keep Travis Hawk safe. They feel that this is their part in this war. There are many changes in this book that had me thinking it was insanely riveting. There's nonstop excitement that will leave you at the edge of your seat, anticipating the arrival of book four. I was lucky enough to read a copy of THE SILENT CORNER, the first book in the Jane Hawk series just before I read this book. Since THE CROOKED STAIRCASE is book three have I only missed THE WHISPERING ROOM. However, I felt reading this book alone worked fine, despite that. I was very glad that I at least had read book one because I felt that I would have been a bit lost without the knowledge from that book. And, that's my advice to readers, start from the beginning.

The story reads like a car chase where Jane Hawk is Americas most wanted and in my eyes she is a hero to break down the people who killed her husband. I loved getting more of an insight on Jane and her son while needing more but I think that Dean Koontz leaves you on the edge of your seat making you want to read the next book. If you are looking for a slow build mystery that keeps you turning pages this is the book for you. Thank you to Netgalley and all parties involved for my arc I am looking forward to book for and seeing how this continues. ( )
