I enjoyed this short story collection, but I do think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the Onyx Court books previously. My favorite is the Regency story about the naval officers. Through the lense of fantasy, we see a whole new world as inhabited ny the likes of Ada Lovelace and St. Teresa of Ávila. A very engrossing way to spend a rainy weekend. I think I was expecting the stories to be a little more exciting. Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Early Reviewers geschrieben. Apparently I grabbed this book in the ER list purely by author, because I was _not_ expecting alt history/fairy stories. That's what I got, though, and thoroughly enjoyed. Her notes at the end of the book (and linked at the end of each story) are worth reading, too - what really happened, and how she added in faerie involvement without altering what happened (or what's known to have happened) to many of the stories. The one about Kit Marlowe's death(s) was fascinating - I knew a little about him, but I'd never heard about his death or the questions that arose around it. Ada Lovelace was wonderful, I enjoyed the Guy Fawkes story (even if the faerie involvement there was kind of pointless), the saint's death was horrifying and all too believable. The story based on a LARP was fascinating - though I kept trying to figure out who the historical characters were, and apparently they weren't. Every story had depth and resonance, and gave me something to think about. Marie Brennan does have wonderful viewpoints. Diese Rezension wurde für LibraryThing Early Reviewers geschrieben. I received this via Early Reviewers. A well written and interesting collection of short stories, mainly historical fantasy, which looks at historical figures from a different (supernatural) perspective. It is a good companion to Maps to Nowhere, which is a similar collection of short stories from the author. I would recommend for fans of this author. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
