This was a good read and I am thankful the book 2 is out already, but I am worried that the second book is going to end on a rather similar cliffhanger. I enjoyed the characters and the plot and am excited to see where the squad continues from here. ( )

I LOVED The Illuminae Files, but now I'm thinking that's because of the great multi-text format rather than anything else.

I understand everyone is 1) a teenager and 2) in the military, but it is SO FRUSTRATING when everyone refuses to listen to Auri when she says she's in danger. Like, come on, you take in a girl with one white eye and fricking powers, and you don't believe someone is after her?

And no one listens to poor Magellan either :(

Even though the chapters were from different points of view, everyone sounded about the same (except beautiful wonderful Zila, who I hope we get more of next book, and who I really hope is not an alien in disguise cause that's the kind of vibe I'm getting): snarky and sarcastic and funny. Which is fine, but not when the majority of the cast is like that!

I did really like The Ra'haam, who are a totally cool alien collective race that spreads through spores and manifests itself (among other ways) in a succulent growing out through someone's eye. Even though once we found out who their hosts were, it was totally obvious that Princeps was Auri's dad. But the GIA make great villains. There's some cool world-building (looots of alien races, with the two that we get to know having pretty solid histories and traits) and good bi rep with Finn (even though I wish I had a better grasp on what his Exosuit looks like) (and I really hope that the hints of Scar/Finn do NOT come to pass). Aurora Rising by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman was a June COYER book club pick and I'd been meaning to get to it. When it was picked for book club it seemed as good a time as any to read it.

Honestly the plot is what dragged this down one star for me. There's a lot of time spent learning all the different species and parts of their cultures in the beginning and in the middle of the story. It almost gets a little overwhelming and I *think* that's the point.

It also felt very stutter stop pacing to me. Hurry up to get to a place to sit and wait, then hurry again. When the action was going though it was fantastic. There were also great plot twists; some of them I saw coming but others I didn't.

I really loved most of the characters. Cat is the one I probably disliked the most. Honestly Tyler was the second. For some reason in this book I've aligned more with Kal, Finian, and Zila then with the other hot shots of the Squad.

I liked Aurora but I didn't see her as a strong character. I could only think of her as someone who lost everything. I'm hoping in the second book she gets more answers about her past and her present.

It was a little slow to start for me and thoroughly confusing at times but I really enjoyed it!

Loved this book so much. It was gripping from the very beginning. Each and every character has there own different and interesting personalities. The character and world-building were amazing and easy to visualize. I put off reading this book for almost a year since I first thought of reading it. I can't believe I went a year of my life longer not knowing this story. My copy of the second book is already on its way and I can't wait to dive in. And that ending, OMG. This book had me in tears so bad that I had to stop for a few minutes cause I couldn't see the words to keep reading. This book earned its 5-star rating. ( )
