- Nicholson, referring to the Masnavi and the Diwan of Shams of Tabriz, masterpieces of the author and the mystic poetry written in Persian, compares them thus: "One is a majestic river, calm and deep that, meandering through varied and lush landscapes , reaches the immeasurable sea, while the other is a tumultuous torrent that jumps and sinks into the ethereal solitude of the mountains. " The Diwan is one of the best examples of mystical literature that, when it is authentic, uses a universal language in which the ideas of unity, love and light are treated with terms and metaphors born from the heart of the mystic in his union with God. JALALUDDIN RUMI was born in the year 1207 (604 of the Hijra) in Balkh, Afghanistan. He was the son of Bahauddin Walad and descendant of the royal house Khwarizm. It is said that Jalaluddin founded the Mevlevi dervish order in memory of his master Shams of Tabriz, establishing his special clothes and his revolving dance. Jalaluddin Rumi, founder of the Sufi Order Mevlevi (whirling dervishes) wrote in the thirteenth century the "Mathnawi", his masterpiece: six books of poetry and imagery of such great power in the original Persian, that his recitation produces a strange exaltation and complex in the consciousness of the listener. His writing can not be categorized exactly as poetry, due to the special complexity of ideas and form: it contains jokes, fables, conversations and passages of pure and exquisite singing. It is a great example of the method of dispersion, by which an image is endowed with a multiple impact to infuse it into the mind of the reader. There are many versions of the "Mathnawi": it has been summarized, extracted, given a literary form, and so on. The version of R.A. Nicholson, who in this edition has been proscribed to facilitate its reading, is quite faithful to the original work and the sense that Rumi printed on the text.
