Ethan Frome, a poor, downtrodden New England farmer is trapped in a loveless marriage to his invalid wife, Zeena. His ambition and intelligence are oppressed by Zeena's cold, conniving character. When Zeena's young cousin Mattie arrives to help care for her, Ethan is immediately taken by Mattie's warm, vivacious personality. They fall desperately in love as he realizes how much is missing from his life and marriage. Tragically, their love is doomed by Zeena's ever-lurking presence and by the social conventions of the day. Here's what I wrote about it when I read in 1987: "Relatively simple tale of insanity brewed in the desolate and isolated farms of New England around the turn of the century. The irony of the tale: an attempt to escape one crazed woman yields a life with two of them." You might want to re-read for the descriptions of the New England countryside, the love triangle, and tragedy of the sledding accident. ( )

After reading The House of Mirth and, more recently, The Age of Innocence, I decided to keep this Edith Wharton train going and jumped into Ethan Frome. And now…I’m depressed!😢

Just so much loss and sadness…loss of dreams, aspirations, opportunities, love, which combined with the “stark” descriptions of the town and the winter landscape, was all a bit of a downer. Just not congruent with Spring and something I should have saved for the Winter.

💫 Spoilers up ahead: (Do not read 2nd to last paragraph if you haven’t read the book!

Ethan’s hopes of a different life came crashing down when he had to return to the farm to take care of his father, then his mother, and then married Zeena, who was “difficult.” Seven years into their marriage, he fell in love with her cousin, Mattie, who came to live with them and help Zeena, who was by all intents and purposes a hypochondriac. Her “illness” (and the guilt that she took care of his ill mother) held Ethan physically, emotionally, and psychologically hostage.

Ethan is a good guy. He refused to take advantage of a neighbor/friend’s generosity on a lie to obtain money to buy his freedom. He decided not to leave his wife: “He saw his life before him as it was. He was a poor man, the husband of a sickly woman, whom his desertion would leave alone and destitute; and even if he had had the heart to desert her he could have done so only by deceiving two kindly people who had pitied him.”

I knew something bad was coming up. I knew that it had to do with the elm (the foreshadowing was there not just about the tree but the “smash-up”), but I did not expect the mutual decision. I also did not expect “life” doubling down on heaping Ethan more of the same life-burdening servings on his already full plate. Yikes.

My daughter just got “The Children” (also by Edith Wharton), which sounds more cheerful and comical, so that may be my next Wharton read. ( )

This novella was my first book by this author, but it won't be my last. I enjoyed her writing style, which is quite straightforward, with evocative descriptions of the landscape. In the first chapter Ethan Frome is a broken middle aged man, and the rest of the book explores the his past twenty years earlier, his relationship with his bitter wife Zeena, and his passion for her cousin, Mattie. In the end, this passion results in tragedy, leaving a sad ending for all concerned. Quite moving and a good read. ( )

This is the first novel I've read from Wharton. There was a lot care that went into the writing and the story, thinking you know how it ends and that dread hanging over and the dread hanging over the whole tale...and then the twist ...tt was spectacular. ( )

It will only take you the afternoon, but it’s shocking snowy ending will leave you pondering it for days.

I had the story, bit by bit, from various people, and, as generally happens in such cases, each time it was a different story. (Author's Introductory Note)
The village lay under two feet of snow, with drifts at the windy corners.

He never turned his face to mine, or answered, except in monosyllables, the questions I put, or such slight pleasantries as I ventured. He seemed a part of the mute melancholy landscape, an incarnation of its frozen woe, with all that was warm and sentient in him fast bound below the surface; but there was nothing unfriendly in his silence. I simply felt that he lived in a depth of moral isolation too remote for casual access, and I had the sense that his loneliness was not merely the result of his personal plight, tragic as I guessed that to be, but had in it, as Harmon Gow had hinted, the profound accumulated cold of many Starkfield winters.
...we came to an orchard of starved apple-trees writing over a hillside among outcroppings of slate that nuzzled up through the snow like animals pushing out their noses to breathe. Beyond the orchard lay a field or two, their boundaries lost under drifts, and above the fields, huddled against the white immensities of land and sky, one of those lonely New England farmhouses that make the landscape lonelier.
