Carefree and careless collide to create awkward in The Upside to Being Single. Ms. Hart is the type of author that makes me forget myself. One glimpse of her brand of funny and I'm blind to everything else. Falling in love is about taking a risk and letting it all hang out. The Upside to Being Single took the glow of youth, from sass to crass and made it a blast. Loved this book! The characters are so hilarious! This is one crazy, funny, laugh out loud sexy times story. The dialogue caught me right from the start, and the three best friends are collectively the hottest mess around. I hope they get books too. Jake and Mellie are such a great match, you can just feel the vibes coming off the page. This is a well written story, with humor, love, sexy times, and much much more(ghost tours anyone) This is told in Mellie's POV with a couple spats of Jakes. After the first three chapters, I was positive I was going to give this book a one-star review, and the only reason I didn't is because it is HOT. But to tell you the truth there are hotter books that are less painful to read. I have a long list of problems with this book. 1. How Jake treated Mellie in the beginning. I believe the author wanted to convey a nonchalant, confident guy. Many times he came across rude and immature. I would be utterly furious if I person treated me the way he treated her in the beginning (I have seen this done intentionally. I do not believe this was the author's intention.). But...toward the end he was incredibly sweet and made some wonderful points. 2. Jake laughs too much. He bursts out laughing at slightly inappropriate times. Many he laughs through situations that require a least a smidge of seriousness. There was a portion where he seemed to be laughing at every single one of Mellie's jokes. They were pretty good jokes, but, please, she is not Kevin Hart. 3.Borderline slut-shaming. There were multiple instances throughout the book that involved Borderline slut-shaming. It was always between friends in a kinda friendly environment. I didn't like it, but it could have been a lot worse. 4.How friends treated each other. I don't have too much to say on this because friendship can be an interesting road. The friends were unnecessarily rude to each other and there was quite a bit of borderline slut-shaming. 5.The name of the book. I know some romance books do this. but why? It is annoying and does nothing except annoy me. (I actually kind of liked the little inserts at the beginning of every chapter, but they didn't serve a purpose.) Alright. Clumsiness. It was a major theme in this book. I know many readers find Mellie's clumsiness quite over-the-top and unbelievable. I am inclined to agree, but I can't. I, unfortunately, am this clumsy. What she went through has never happened to me in such a short timespan, but given the right conditions, it could. In summary, I don't recommend it. I will not be reading it again. I'm sorry Emma Hart. I found the character strained and unbelievable. The relationships were painful to read. The Upside of Being Single had a few redeeming qualities, but not enough. If anyone asks, I knew better than to flash my boobs for Mardi Gras beads. I still don't know why I did it. Maybe it was the dare from my two best friends. Maybe it was the guys on the balcony saying they'd throw Fireball shots with the beads. Or maybe it was the quiet guy in the corner of that same balcony with piercing gray eyes, wavy dark hair, and a smile so tempting I wanted to climb up there and lick it off his face. Maybe it was because I never thought I'd see them again. Not that it matters. Not today. Because the hotel I manage was finally bought And the guy who walks in and introduces himself as my new boss is Mr. Tall, Dark, and Silent. There are many upsides to being single. Your new boss knowing what your boobs look like? Not one of them. Contains mature themes. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |

On the other hand, the chemistry was well written and I especially liked Jake's point of view. I think it was really well done that there where only few glimpses from his side, but in right places. Which I guess is more important for romance. Still, I felt Jake was a bit cardboard-y "dream man" instead of a real person. Mellie had more of a personality, but even that seemed to be more about her being clumsy instead of real character traits. I think the writer knows how to write, which kept me reading, but character development could use some work.
So, I found this entertaining and ruined my night's sleep with it, but I'm wondering if it was really worth it. Probably should've read my dragon book instead. ( )
