In ancient Rome, a woman flees for her life. Her enemies are those she once called 'brother'. Hidden beneath her blue cloak are secrets men will kill for - forgeries that prove the newly self-appointed bishops are not followers of the way, but pretenders who have seized power and will stop at nothing to shape this new religion to their own ends. Now, Julia - a woman who had once walked with Mary Magdalene and taught alongside Paul must preserve the legacy of the apostles in the face of terrifying danger. Two thousand years later, classical archaeologists Valentina Vella and Erika Simone are tasked with advising the newly-elected Pope on the historical legacy of women in the early Christian period. The women stumble across an ancient parchment buried deep in the Vatican archives, a document that has clearly been altered. They find themselves on the trail of a woman who may have been the first woman Bishop in the Catholic faith. To reveal Julia's legacy will put them in the cross-hairs of a venomous Vatican battle for power and supremacy; to stay silent would make them complicit in an ancient heresy and would betray the teachings that Julia sacrificed her life to defend. 'The Mystery of Julia Episcopa' weaves seamlessly between modern day Rome and the politics of the Catholic church, and the times and life of a 1st century Roman noblewoman who rose to be a dominant force in the early Christian movement.… (mehr)

The Mystery of Julia Episcopa by John I. Rigoli (2021)

Written in the early days of the growth of the Christian Church and in the present day reporting on the past this is an interesting view of the role women have played in the development of the church and what men continue to do to protect their power in the church.

Two women archeologists discover information in the Vatican Library which leads them to research the life of Julia Episcopa whom they believe was a bishop in the Catholic Church in the first century. They keep their discovery a secret until they are able to meet with the Pope and his top officials. The reaction to this was generally similar in both the first and twenty-first centuries - negative although there were a couple of the clergy who saw it as positive for the Church. A death, perhaps a murder follows and the case is dismissed. All are sworn to secrecy. But will it hold?

I liked the movement between the centuries and the women telling the story. It was interesting to see how behaviours and beliefs have not changed over the centuries.

I received this book through LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers Program.

I read this as soon as I received it and loved it. Once I realized that I didn't write a review for here, I sat down and read it straight through agaun. Rereading this book was like catching up with an old friend. I love the history and early culture interwoven in the story. It was revealing on how restricted Roman women's lives were ( )

Disclaimer: I received this book as a NetGalley ARC. No compensation was received other than the chance to read this work.

This work, this first in its series, is a religious mystery novel set between pre-100 AD and the modern day Vatican.

The novel focuses on the potential discovery of the existence of a female bishop. This potential discovery rocks the Vatican, the archaeologists and the researchers involved.

This is a well-written story with alternating timelines and viewpoints. It manages to stay cohesive throughout the narrative. While there is some character development, due to the sprawling nature of the narrative the character who gains the most development throughout is the main focus of the investigation, Julia Episcopa. The character development varies from person to person, and it is assumed that these characters, having been introduced through this work, will become more fleshed out as the series progresses.

This is an engaging read, but those who have deep feelings regarding the Catholic Church may find this a more difficult book to engage with.

Recommended for readers who enjoy Donna Leon and Dan Brown. ( )

A good historical fiction story. It was unusual in that it followed a young Roman woman who converts to Christianity following the crucifixion. The setting of the story appeared to be well researched. Biblical figures like Peter, Paul and Mary Magdalene made an appearance. Don't know if I will read the next in the series but I did enjoy this one. ( )

I was very disappointed in this book. The reviews I kept seeing pop up on Facebook said it read like a Dan Brown novel- it didn’t ☹️
The story itself was good by the writing lacked in my opinion.
Tat saying, it wasn’t the worse I’ve read and I believe some will like it.
As for me, I will not buy the sequels. ( )
