"Mister Miracle is magical, dark, intimate and unlike anything you've read before. Scott Free is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. So great, he escaped Granny Goodness' gruesome orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to travel across galaxies and set up a new life on Earth with his wife, Big Barda. Using the stage alter ego of Mister Miracle, he has made quite a career for himself showing off his acrobatic escape techniques. He even caught the attention of the Justice League, who has counted him among its ranks. You might say Scott Free has everything--so why isn't it enough? Mister Miracle has mastered every illusion, achieved every stunt, pulled off every trick--except one. He has never escaped death. Is it even possible? Our hero is going to have to kill himself if he wants to find out. From Hugo Award nominated writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads, the team behind The Sheriff of Babylon, comes an ambitious new take on one of Jack Kirby's most beloved New Gods in Mister Miracle!"--… (mehr)

I'm not a fan of DC heroes in general. I know there's the odd exception, such as Watchmen, the odd Batman story, etc., and I'll also be the first to admit that, because I'm not a fan, I'm also massively uninformed because I just don't read DC stuff as a rule, so I'm likely missing out on a few really good storylines.

Having said that, I work with two different guys who have, for the past year or so, told me I must read Tom King's Mister Miracle. And for the past year or so, I've studiously ignored them.

Yeah, well, then along comes Tom King's Strange Adventures run, and somehow, I've found myself reading it, issue by issue. So, fine, the Mr. Miracle story has the same team.

Fine. I'll read the damn thing.

And...wow. So good. On so many levels.

The writing is incredible. Big Barda and Scott Free are absolutely living and breathing and oh so real. They're so immersed in the "day job" that there's a level of ennui there that is shocking—and shockingly hilarious—until...well until the "day job" becomes far too real again.

The art is just wonderful. I don't know how this series would have been anywhere as successful in getting its many points across without Gerads' art.

As for the story itself, there's so much to unpack here. Scott and Barda's relationship. Scott's suicide attempt and mental state. The horrors of war and the desensitization to it all. The fallout of an abusive childhood. The realization that your parents aren't the gods you thought they were. The excitement and bone-wearying exhaustion of parenthood, and balancing parenting and work.

There's far too many things going on to allow this story to work, and yet, not only does it work, it frigging smokes.

And the whole Stan Lee/Jack Kirby subplot? Well damn.

Can't recommend this highly enough. ( )

I wanted to like this graphic novel, especially with his 4.49 average rating from Goodreads, but I simply could not. Incredibly confusing, and Tom King just did not bring together the various plotlines or characters into any kind of coherent story, even after 300 pages. I think the one redeeming feature was the strong and loving bond between Scott Free and Big Barda. ( )

So so... definitely trying to do too much, I felt. There were parts that I felt went a little too far in terms of how dark it got. I wanted to put it down more than once. ( )

This is book compiling the 12 issue mini-series by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. Please, don't combine it with Jack Kirby's works.
