Fiction. Literature. Science Fiction. HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Han Solo and Lando Calrissian are reunited on the Millennium Falcon in a galaxy-spanning novel inspired by Solo: A Star Wars Story. But even the fastest ship in the universe can’t outrun the past. . . .
THEN:

It’s one of the galaxy’s most dangerous secrets: a mysterious transmitter with unknown power and a reward for its discovery that most could only dream of claiming. But those who fly the Millennium Falcon throughout its infamous history aren’t your average scoundrels. Not once, but twice, the crew of the Falcon tries to claim the elusive prize—first, Lando Calrissian and the droid L3-37 at the dawn of an ambitious career, and later, a young and hungry Han Solo with the help of his copilot, Chewbacca. But the device’s creator, the volatile criminal Fyzen Gor, isn’t interested in sharing. And Gor knows how to hold a grudge. . . .

NOW:

It’s been ten years since the rebel hero Han Solo last encountered Fyzen Gor. After mounting a successful rebellion against the Empire and starting a family with an Alderaanian princess, Han hasn’t given much thought to the mad inventor. But when Lando turns up at Han’s doorstep in the middle of the night, it’s Fyzen’s assassins that he’s running from. And without Han’s help, Lando—and all life on Cloud City—will be annihilated.

With the assistance of a young hotshot pilot, an Ewok slicer prodigy, the woman who might be the love of Lando’s life, and Han’s best and furriest friend, the two most notorious scoundrels in the New Republic are working together once more. They’ll have to journey across the stars—and into the past—before Gor uses the device’s power to reshape the galaxy.

I'm not sure why many folks dislike this book. I thought Daniel Jose Older did a great job handling Solo, Lando, and Leia. And Last Shot is filled with action, hilarious dialogue, and features an Ewok slicer (oh, and killer droids - literally). The book is (mostly) set after the events of Return of the Jedi, and the plot revolves around a transmitter that Lando and Han have to team up and find before someone very nasty gets their hands on it. There are flashbacks regarding the first time that each of them encountered this transmitter, as well as flashbacks to its creation at the hands of a particularly disturbed Pau’an named Fyzen Gor. While peering back into the past, we keep an eye on the present as the former-smuggling duo assemble a new team to take on this unprecedented and particularly strange threat. At first, I found the flashbacks (done in the fashion of binary plots) to be distracting but it is easy to track once you get used to it. This was a fun ride with our favorite scoundrel and I highly recommend this book to any Star Wars fan. It tied in ideas from the prequels, OT, the new trilogy, and the spinoff Solo prequel very well. Daniel Jose Older should be proud. Next to Claudia Gray and Timothy Zahn, he is one of my favorite Star Wars authors right now. Please write more Star Wars books! ( )

I wanted to love this book. Daniel José Older's short story and narration was the standout for me in "A Certain Point of View" and I really hoped he could do a lot with Lando especially in this novel.

Unfortunately, Last Shot is okay to good, not great. While he Older had me at "Ewok Slicer" it just feels like the book dragged on throughout. You could almost ditch part I completely for example and give us even more Lando & L3. It takes a while but the plot does get going eventually and it's a nice smuggler anthology in a way.

One thing is clear though: Lando > Han in almost every respect. I think part of this is that canon really hems Han in now with both Solo and the OT Force Awakens movies. Stuff happens to Han whereas Lando is still an intriguing mover and shaker who's allowed to develop outside movie canon. This may be what contributes to the sense of a lost opportunity to do even more with the two scoundrels than Older was allowed to.

As an aside, the audiobook itself is great. Three narrators, including Older himself and they all do a very good good job. I just love how you can practically feel Older grinning through the spoken word and it went a long way towards enjoying the overall story. ( )

A fun jaunt with our favorite characters. I'll admit I had a hard time keeping some of the characters and locations straight. But as a story unfolded all the threads came together. My favorite kind of villain is the one who is this kind of psychological madman. I did want to smack Han frequently, but I'm sure he's used to that. ( )

It's like Star Wars, I, Robot, and Blade Runner had a drunkenly good time and spawned a novel baby. It's a fun, excited read. ( )

Not a fan at all of the multiple time periods all balled up together. It was quite a mess to try and figure out, and certainly was too much effort as a reader. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the new characters Taka and Pikpa (idk about spelling b/c audiobook) though I think this book did Han’s character a bit of a disservice. ( )
