A Barbara Delinsky classic, For My Daughters is a poignant and unforgettable story of the enduring power of love and the tenacious strength of family from the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author. Estranged sisters Caroline, Annette, and Leah St. Clair have spent their lives trying to escape the legacy of their wealthy, aloof, social-climbing mother, Virginia--each losing a certain part of herself in the process. Now, on the eve of her seventieth birthday, Virginia has asked them all to help her get settled into her magnificent new estate on the rocky coast of Maine, a request each sister reluctantly agrees to, thinking it may be her mother's last. But it is Virginia who has something to give to the daughters she neglected in childhood. For amid the glories of a New England summer, three sisters will finally learn the answers to the questions that have troubled them for years . . . and new truths that will stay with them forever.… (mehr)

Love the setting and the very detailed descriptions of the waterfront.
Starts out with her interest in the gardener, Will Cray as he goes about his work. She's married to Daniel and has had to leave him.

An unemotional, distant mother has 3 daughters who specialize in 3 things: family, lawyering, and partying. She invites them all to a house she just bought in Maine and each go, thinking she was the only one she asked. Then they stayed on because she wasn’t there yet and gradually began mending fences in their relationships. There was a handsome gardener that became involved and some surprising developments before the mother actually came; told her daughters why she had bought the house -- because years before she had had an affair with the gardener based on mutual attraction, but left with her husband and coped by becoming non-emotional. They all mended fences, but mom died the next day and the youngest finally married the first gardener’s son who was the present one. ( )
