*I got this book for review form the publisher*

I really enjoyed this read. I found the diversity to be such a fun read. I found this book to a super compelling read. I thought the end of the book was a tad rushed. I really loved the myths that this story used. I also loved how this story had a trio of characters. I really found his book to be such a fun read and I am really excited for the sequel as well! ( )

Not only was this is a great adventure, It was a very exciting glimpse into the mythology of the original people of the New Mexican area. Growing up nearby much of it was vaguely familiar and I definitely appreciated the callbacks to the cuisine.

Our main character is the classic reluctant hero thrust into adventure without knowing why he is special or what lays beyond the reality he's grown up with. Added to this he has a disability which previously hindered him and becomes crucial to mastering his destiny. ( )

Ok, so I have huge admiration for Rick Riordan for knowing his audience really well and for channeling that audience towards mythologies that he doesn't know everything about written by Own Voices authors. I also have huge admiration for JC Cervantes for writing a fast paced, never ending mystery of an adventure that will absolutely appeal to Riordan fans -- this is an excellent book in that genre.

Unfortunately, I am not the right audience for that genre, so while I have an endless appetite for ridiculous romance scenarios and paranormal silliness, I just couldn't get into this thing, any more than I could get into the original Riordan books. Tell your rabidly pacing 3rd-6th graders who are dying for the next Riordan adventure to pick this up. They will not be disappointed. I'll be in the next aisle, enjoying steampunk and werewolves and adventuring wombats. ( )

This book is about a boy who fulfills a dangerous prophecy, and has to fight to undo the damage with the help of new friends and his estranged father, who he learns is a god. This book highlights the interesting tales of Maya gods and Maya culture, does a really cool job at showing what makes you different can actually be your biggest strength. This book is appropriate for late-intermediate to middle level readers. ( )
