Jack Reacher has extended his thumb and hit the pavement. His plan is to follow the autumn sun on an epic trip across America, from Maine to California. He doesn't get far. On a country road in rural New Hampshire, deep in the New England woods, he sees a sign to a place he has never been: the town where his father was born. He thinks, What's one extra day? and takes the detour. At the same moment, in the same isolated area, a car breaks down. Two young Canadians are trying to drive to New York City to sell a treasure. Now they're stranded at a lonely motel in the middle of nowhere. The owners almost seem too friendly. It's a strange place...but it's all there is. The next morning in the city clerk's office, Reacher asks about the old family home. He's told no one named Reacher ever lived in town. He knows his father left and never returned. Now Reacher wonders, was he ever there in the first place? As Reacher explores his father's life, and strands of different stories begin to merge, he makes a shocking discovery: The present can be tough, but the past can be tense...and deadly.… (mehr)

I loved this edition of the Jack Reacher series. It starts with Jack thumbing his way to a warmer climate before winter hits, which never works out as planned. He immediately gets stalled in the small, rural town of Laconia, New Hampshire, where he stops to look for his late father’s place of birth. While Reacher methodically checks local records for evidence of Stan Reacher, who may or may not have lived at a tin mill named Ryantown in 1943, the book also follows Patty and Shorty from Canada to a demonic motel where they get trapped into playing a deadly game of tag. There’s plenty of intrigue and action on both fronts until they intersect in an explosive conclusion. Between the strange, often violent, search Jack conducts chasing his roots and the crazy, mysterious games Patty and Shorty suffer, I couldn’t put this book down. I had to know what was coming next. If you like the systematic, no-nonsense Jack Reacher character, I highly recommend Past Tense. You won’t be disappointed. ( )

Different plot development style than usual for a Reacher novel, very well done. ( )

Jack Reacher caught the last of the summer sun in a small town on the coast of Maine, and then, like the birds in the sky above him, he began his long migration south.
