I would use this book for a a 2nd grade class to use as a model for simple poetry. I would read the book as a read aloud and have the students pick out things they see differently in the poetry compared to another prose story. I would make a list on chart paper of the different qualities of poetry so the students could refer back to it as an anchor chart in the classroom. I would have the students use these qualities to write their own short poem about something fun they have experienced. If I used this for a 3rd grade class I would talk about point of view since the poem is told from the perspective of the mother. It is interesting because it is about the baby and his adventure but it is told from the mother's perspective and what they saw on their walk. I would introduce the different types of point of view and have them pick which one they believed the poem was told from. We would pick out the different words that reveal what point of view it is. I would give them lists of the different words for each point of view and have them work with a partner on a poem written from a different point of views. After each group finishes I would have them each share so the other students could hear the differences in points of views.

A toddler is going for a ride to the park. This story is about how the world looks to him. It is filled with shoes, skateboards, dogs, and people saying "What a cute baby." He tries to reach and get the things he sees but mom keeps him strapped in.

It is interesting to think of seeing the world through the child's eyes. He describes the garbage truck as having big teeth. I never thought about it looking like that before. How big everything must look.

I would try to find another book about seeing the world differently. I would also get a pair of 3-d glasses and talk about how the world looks through them. This would be a good discussion starter.
