This timely reprint by the Apocryphile Press has brought Anson's fascinating work within the pocket of the interested layperson, although it too may become scarce, like the original version in its turn! Overall an excellent effort, marked down only slightly due to the quality of the reproduction of the photographs, but well worth getting. ( ) A legendary tome, one of Peter F. Anson's defining works, a loving-compiled catalogue of the bizarre phenomenon of the "wandering bishop" - originally a bishop without jurisdiction but now applying to a class of bishops claiming apostolic succession from one or more of the historic churches but more often than not not recognised by the responsible See and presiding over a smaller or larger splinter body owing allegiance to them and displaying a variable allegiance to orthodox doctrine. Endlessly fascinating and very scarce in the original edition (allegedly owing to the eagerness of the said prelates in buying-up copies to see what was said about them!) "This story is one of the strangest and most fantastic religious movements to be found in the whole range of what may be described as the erratic "goings on" of the ecclesiastical underworld." -ADAPTED from the INTRODUCTION. The independent Catholic movement has branches all over the world. It constitutes one of the most interesting and diverse movements in Christian history, one worthy of greater visibility and academic attention. Here is the classic history of the various successions claimed by most independent jurisdictions. This is the most sought-after book in the movement's history, now back in print after forty years from the Apocryphile Press. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
