Two people. Ten chances. One unforgettable love story. Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic ... and then her bus drives away. Certain they're fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn't find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they "reunite" at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It's Jack, the man from the bus. It would be. What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.… (mehr)

One of the prompts I had for a round of TBR Monopoly was to read a book that had been gifted to me. During the last round of OTSP Secret Sister that I participated in my lovely sis Victoria sent me One Day in December by Josie Silver.

I am such a sucker for endings. If this book didn't have such a great ending I think it might have ended up as a three star read. This is definitely a slow burn. I cannot stress that enough. There's also a lot that happens from Point A to Point B. You might want to know that this book spans years in the characters's lives. At times it was frustrating. At the end of it all though I liked the experience.

I felt so bad for both Jack and Laurie. They were in such a tough spot. I can certainly imagine how it seemed like the universe was mocking them. One of the biggest issues I had with One Day in December is that Jack and Laurie clearly never stopped having feelings for each other. It made the rest of the book feel a bit icky. It felt like the continued feelings tainted all of their other relationships. Nobody wins in that situation.

In hindsight the ending really saved One Day in December by Josie Silver. I don't know if it would be worth the journey for other readers.

I chose this book because of the cover, expecting a lighter "rom-com" type feel. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a little more than that and enjoyed the story of love, loss, and friendship. The story is told over a period of 10 years and I enjoyed that even though I didn't love the characters all the time I could relate to their challenges and enjoyed the concept of falling in love with someone vs staying in love and what that really means in the long term. This was my first Josie Silver book and I look forward to reading more from her in the future. ( )

It's a wonder everyone who uses public transportation in winter doesn't keel over and die of germ overload.

"I find that lies encumber me."
We are a triangle, but our sides have kept changing length. Nothing has ever quite been equal. Perhaps it's time to learn how to stand on our own, rather than lean on each other.
That's the thing about flowers, isn't it? They're lush and extravagant and demand your attention, and you think they're the most exquisite thing, but then in the shortest time they're not very lovely at all. They wilt and they turn the water brown, and soon you can't hold on to them any longer.
...how much information constitutes the truth, how much omission constitutes lying.
There's something about living in a different place that allows you to be whoever you want to be.
