Even though Sadie's song is only one syllable, it means many things to her and her mother as they go for a walk.

This was a book that a child picked out for me to read to them, and I enjoyed the simplicity of the story. One very important part of books for beginner readers is the flow of the story and its predictability. This book did both, as we go on a stroll with a toddler and her mother as she sings a song through town. The story flows very well and its transitions are smooth. It is predictable in that it has many repeating words, such as “Ghee ghee ghee,” the song that Sadie sings throughout her adventure. The student who read this with me was able to read along and even predict when Sadie would sing, which was great to see in a beginning reader. The writing was well done and contained a lot of frequently taught sight words for young readers. The language was not too difficult and the story was relatable to children in its target age group. I loved how the song changed as they continued on their journey – from a street song, to a river song, to a going-home song, and finally to a naptime song. It was a good indication to the progression of the story and where the author was taking us as the readers. Finally, the pictures were very essential to the story. The author does not explicitly write many of the things that Sadie and her mother are doing throughout the book, but makes them known through the illustrations. The art itself was fantastic and really reminded me of the art that you see in the book Madeleine. The colors were not too bright but were soft and simple, which I really enjoyed. Overall, this was a great book for beginner readers and I would recommend it for the classroom. ( )
