Peter Brown's first book is a hoot! It is about the Waddlers (flightless birds) wanting to be Flappers (flying birds) instead of their pooping targets. The Waddlers, led by a penguin, come up with a plan to take to the sky. The missed idea's are comical and even though there are no words about the contraptions, the illustrations tell us everything! When the Waddlers make it up in to the air, they race a flock of geese and end up in a storm. Those same Flapper geese came to their rescue and got the Waddlers back on land. Friends at the end, they have much to teach each other. This is a comical book with delightful illustrations about the frustrations and jealousy of flightless birds. ( )

36 months - we like intelligent poop humor ( Everybody Poops) as much as anyone but I'm not sure it was necessary in this story. Ok story but the message is dulled by the attempt at humor. ( )

When a passing goose poops right on him one morning, Penguin decides that he has had enough! He and his fellow Waddlers - flightless birds like Ostrich, Kiwi, and Cassowary - are going to show those Flappers (flying birds) what's what! And so begins the quest to fly, leading to the creation of the Dodo. But when their maiden voyage sees them in serious trouble, and a flock of geese come to their rescue, Penguin and his friends realize that they still have a lot to learn...

After reading and enjoying Peter Brown's recent The Curious Garden, I am not surprised that I liked this earlier work as well. Both narrative and artwork are humorous and heartwarming, and have great appeal. Given the popularity of Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series, and the Walter the Farting Dog books, I suspect that the "precision pooping" in this one will have young readers giggling. Brown's acrylic and pencil illustrations are colorful and engaging, accentuating the humor of the tale, and the wonder of flight. An all-around winner, perfect for story-time! ( )

Z just didn't get as into this as much as I thought he would. He said: It was good, not great. ( )

When Penguin gets pooped on by a flock of passing geese, he decides enough is enough. He assembles a group of his fellow "waddlers" to build a flying machine to allow them to take to the sky like the "flappers". Hilarity and jeopardy ensue.
A fun story with lots of humour enhanced by author Peter Brown's own painted illustrations. Penguin and his friends are well designed, appealing characters and the pictures are full of clever asides to keep the reader entertained.
I suppose there is a message here about unlikely friendships and learning from others but, mostly, this is just a good silly story about some goofy birds.
The only potential drawback is the amount of laughs derived from poop and pooping. If you really object to that sort of thing ,then this book is not for you or your kids. ( )
