There's a blurb on the cover that uses the word 'supernatural' so I knew it wasn't going to be a straight up murder mystery type of book, but I didn't like where it eventually ended up going. It felt silly and almost like the author changed his mind about what was really going on half way through and never went back to alter the clues. There were a lot of mentions of wolves in the beginning. Scott has a wolf head door knocker, he's described as having a wolfish grin, etc. I assumed these were clues pointing towards something more physically supernatural than what eventually it was revealed to be. Towards the end it just felt preachy and annoying. ( ) I'm conflicted on this one. The first 200-250 pages grabbed me by the throat. I sailed through them quickly and easily. When I finally got to the big reveals at the end, the story lost me. That's not because I think it's badly constructed. In fact, Arnopp does a great job laying out the breadcrumbs. I can imagine a second reading being rewarding due to that. But the places this narrative goes just didn't work for me. All in all, a little bit of a mixed bag, but definitely a page-turner. I likely made a mistake, reading this immediately after the absolutely awesome The Twisted Ones. Any other horror novel, unless it was stupendous, was going to suffer by comparison. This isn't a bad book. To be honest, I actually quite enjoyed it. It had twists and turns. It was fun. The relationship was very real, and I loved the present day realizations versus the past recollections of the start of the romance. But, then, toward the end, things seemed to get a bit silly. The twin brother. That whole bit near the very end with her realization...nope. Didn't work for me. Great premise, but Arnopp didn't quite stick the landing. "Kate Collins has been ghosted. She was supposed to be moving in with her new boyfriend Scott, but all she finds after relocating to Brighton is an empty apartment. Scott has vanished. His possessions have all disappeared. Except for his mobile phone. Kate knows she shouldn't hack into Scott's phone. She shouldn't look at his Tinder, his calls, his social media. But she can't quite help herself. That's when the trouble starts. Strange, whispering phone calls from numbers she doesn't recognize. Scratch marks on the walls that she can't explain. And the growing feeling that she's being watched. Kate refuses to leave the apartment - she's not going anywhere until she's discovered what happened to Scott. But the deeper she dives into Scott's digital history the more Kate realizes just how little she really knows about the man she loves."--Publisher. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
