I liked this book but I do not think I would have it in my future classroom. I did not find it to be very informational and it seemed to be a nonfiction story about a girl and how much she lives spring and animals. I think i could find better informational books that are about spring and animals

This is a picture book about the biography of Rachel Charson. The book introduce her life experience and how she got interested in the nature and how she protected the environment.



The author introduced the biography in a very warm and friendly way, with the lovely drawings of little animals living around us. There are lot of speech bubbles embedded in the pictures as the author address the beauty of nature with a symphony of animals' sounds. These sounds are easy for readers to connect to their own experiences since they are easy to hear in neighbors, such as, the honk of wild geese. I think this would encourage readers to explore and enjoy the nature around them. In the end of the book, the author tells how Rachel Charson develop a habit of studying about nature with details, such as, in the morning... This introduce a way that readers could be an environment observer themselves. ( )

Spring After Spring is a fascinating book about how Rachel Carson grew up to essentially begin the environmental movement. This book really delves into how Rachel Carson began learning about nature and wildlife from a young age and how that love shaped her career choice and history. I had never heard of Rachel Carson before reading this book, and I am completely inspired by her. Rachel wrote a book called Silent Spring about the negative side effects of human use of chemicals in farming and everyday life. It was such an impactful book, it changed the minds and laws back the 1950's and basically began environmental movement. Also, the reader cannot help but be inspired by her passion and drive. The book states several times that Rachel was scared, but she did it anyway. It is such a simple statement, but it is so incredibly true. She did not allow fear to hold her back and ended up changing the world. I really ejoyed this book. The animation is really enjoyable and because of all of the wildlife, I believe would really appeal to young readers. I would definitely recommend this book. ( )

I do not dislike all picture book biographies, I just find very few that I think are actually useful and not just pointless artistic exercises. I was surprised and pleased to find this one met all of my (many) requirements.

The first half of the book tells the story of Rachel Carson's childhood; her love of exploration and nature, and the time she spent observing and listening to the world around her. The second half gives a simple overview of her pivotal research, showing the effects of pesticides, her presentation to President Kennedy, and a final joyful spread showing a diverse group of people enjoying the natural world she loved. A quiet night scene shows Carson continuing her observation and care of the natural world. An extensive author's note, notes, and bibliography offer more resources for older readers interested in learning more about Carson's brief but influential life.

Sisson's art is a large part of the appeal of this book for me; paneled drawings show Carson as a child exploring the world filled with birds, animals, and green. As an adult, a stark, dark panel shows the rapidly disappearing wildlife. Carefully drawn diagrams explain how pesticides affected the birds and wildlife. Young readers don't need a lot of context to understand Carson's story and the attractive, clear art is seamlessly blended with the narrative. While there are more aspects to Carson's life, such as the sexism she faced, and more history, including the tumultuous issues of the 1960s, Sisson has done a great job of explaining why Rachel Carson is important in a way that young children can easily understand.

Verdict: This is a good choice for use in classrooms and libraries for children interested in the natural world, female scientists, and some simple history about the environmental movement.
