"Why has nationalism come roaring back? Trump in America, Brexit in the U.K., anti-EU parties in Italy, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, and Hungary, and nativist or authoritarian leaders in Turkey, Russia, India, and China -- why has nationalism suddenly returned with a vengeance? Is the world headed back to the fractious conflicts between nations that led to world wars and depression in the early 20th Century? Why are nationalists so angry about free trade and immigration? Why has globalization become a dirty word? Based on travels in America, Europe, and Asia, veteran political analyst John B. Judis found that almost all people share nationalist sentiments that can be the basis of vibrant democracies as well as repressive dictatorships. Today's outbreak of toxic "us vs. them" nationalism is an extreme reaction to utopian cosmopolitanism, which advocates open borders, free trade, rampant outsourcing, and has branded nationalist sentiments as bigotry. Can a new international order be created that doesn't dismiss what is constructive about nationalism? As he did for populism in The Populist Explosion, a runaway success after the 2016 election, Judis looks at nationalism from its modern origins in the 1800s to today to find answers"-- back cover.… (mehr)

I found this to be a very interesting book, and a much needed look at the realities of nationalism and globalism. John B. Judis argues that nationalism can be both good and bad: Abraham Lincoln and Benito Mussolini were both nationalists. He also issues a timely warning that nationalism is a reality in many countries, that is risky to ignore. He cites countries such as Hungary and Poland, who have had to struggle to become and remain nations; their bitter experiences has made them cling to their sense of nationhood and shared culture, which makes it difficult for them to fall in line with the European Union's expectation of taking in immigrants from very different cultures.

Judis also thinks that the European Union is fragile because of the differences between northwestern and southwestern culture and economics. He seems to suggest the it would have been better to have retained the European Economic Community, which was more flexible. The Union could fracture as various countries turn to the Right as an alternative to difficult situations created by globalism that cannot simply be dismissed or argued away. I think that one problem is that so many western European leaders want to leap from individual nations to globalism, when building a sense of pan-European nationalism might have worked better as at least as the first step.

The United States is also having problems pitting globalists against those who have been left behind in spite of its successes. Judis faults both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush for serious errors in judgement that failed to take into account these problems, as well as the nationalism of other nations. Ignoring it within their own country has lead to the discontent and alienation among many voters, and brought about the election of Trump. ( )
