Excerpt from A Complete History of the Great Flood at Sheffield on March 11& 12, 1864: A True and Original Narrative, From Authentic Sources, Comprising Numerous Facts, Incidents, and Statistics Never Before Published AN event of such tragic and painful interest as the great Flood at Sheffield, demands a more complete and permanent record than the fragmentary and imperfect accounts which have appeared in the local and other newspapers. The object of the present publication is to furnish a consecutive, authentic, and original narrative of the Flood and its incidents. To accomplish this no labour has been spared. While all the accounts which have already appeared have been examined and collated, nothing has been taken for granted. All the ground has been thoroughly gone over, the truth or otherwise of almost every particular has been investigated, and a vast number of facts have been collected on the spot, from the parties actually concerned in them, so that what is here placed upon record depended upon as having been obtained from the best and most.
