Celebrate music icon Carlos Santana in this vibrant, rhythmic picture book from the author of the New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book Muddy: The Story of Blues Legend Muddy Waters.
Carlos Santana loved to listen to his father play el violín. It was a sound that filled the world with magic and love and feeling and healing—a sound that made angels real. Carlos wanted to make angels real, too. So he started playing music.

Carlos tried el clarinete and el violín, but there were no angels. Then he picked up la guitarra. He took the soul of the Blues, the brains of Jazz, and the energy of Rock and Roll, and added the slow heat of Afro-Cuban drums and the cilantro-scented sway of the music he'd grown up with in Mexico. There were a lot of bands in San Francisco but none of them sounded like this. Had Carlos finally found the music that would make his angels real?

In a more raw, emotional version of Carlos Santana's life story, young Santana is finding his musical voice - trying to find the music that will "make the angels sing". He grows up, moves to California in the U.S., finds the combination of styles, instruments, stories, and grooves that make his heart happy and at last, when Santana finds his own voice, the angels sing.

I have yet to read another book that felt like the illustrations cannot be separated from the words, and the words cannot be separated from the illustrations. Together, they make a beautiful narrative, a mural of a book. They so suit each other, and enhance one another. ( )

Growing up, Carlos Santana listened to his father playing the violin. He believed that his music was a sound that filled the world with magic and love and made angels real. He knew that he wanted to make angels real too so he started playing music. This bok is good for kids who are interested in the arts. This book can relate to the multiple intelligences where some kids may realte more the music than math or science. This book can help kids realize the gift they may have. ( )

This is my favorite children's book I have ever read. Mahin's poetic and sing-song structure spoke to me in a way that I can not explain. There were some Spanish phrases throughout the book that added a lovely texture beyond the words on the page. The use of alliteration is genius because it emphasizes important points while making them sound like a song.
Carlos Santana's story is interesting to follow. He grew up in poor neighborhoods until he moved to San Fransisco. He hated it there and ran away from home to play where people understood him. When he found his sound with the guitar, he moved back to San Fransisco and formed a band. The band became famous there, so he played at a music festival where more people say him play. The whole story is about him finding the angels in his music that he heard when his dad played. At the end, he finally does. It is a very well written and well illustrated book. ( )

A brief account of the life of Carlos Santana. The reader catches a glimpse of where the musician came from and how he grew up. The reader also learns how events throughout h Carlos Santana's life helped to mold his stye of music and eventually his career. Though written mostly in English, Spanish words are sprinkled throughout this text, which only adds to the experience. Family, hard-work, and perseverance are key values that were central in creating who Carlos Santana is today. ( )
