Of Numbers and Stars is a great book for students to see that even women can also be interested in philosophy, mathematics, and sciences. It also shows that women can become elite scholars and go to schools that help in the learning of philosophy, mathematics, and science. I would recommend this book to also teach what it was like to be a girl back in the ancient times. I would use this book for grades that are older. One of the parts that I enjoyed was how encouraging her father was towards her studies. It shows students that they should also be encouraging towards minority groups that are sometimes told they need to stick to certain roles. ( )

This is a biography of Hypatia that shows the difference that she made at that time. Her father taught her and she was able to become a great person. She learned to do many new things thanks her father and was even able to teach others. She became the teacher that everyone favored by being very creative, outgoing and thinking about those around her. This is a great story for children to lean from and see that things were not always as easy as they are now. In Egypt, it was know that women needed to be servers and leave the education for men. Children will learn about her different accomplishments and at the same time about math. ( )

Although, the book was about Hypatia and her learning new things there was little about mathematics. There was no natural connections to mathematics besides the mention of her learning about geometry and arithmetic but nothing specific about it. There was no opportunity for me to use math for for authentic purposes. ( )

Of Numbers and Stars is a short yet informative book detailing the early life of Hypatia. If it wasn’t for her father’s teachings, Hypatia’s story could have been a very different one. Born in ancient Alexandria, where women rarely learned to read and write, Hypatia became a celebrated philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician.
I love learning about all historical time periods and people, but ancient civilizations have always been so fascinating to me. I had just recently listened to a podcast about Hypatia which is why I chose to read this book. I liked how the illustrations reflected the era in which Hypatia lived. While it did give insight into her life, as well as a brief glimpse into life in Alexandria, I did not find it to be very engaging. However, I think it would be a great introduction to her story and ancient civilizations for young readers.
This book, although not my favorite, tells an important story of a woman ahead of her time. ( )

This picture book was about the younger life of Hypatia. Born in ancient Alexanderia, where girls werent expected to be educated, she becomes one of the most beloved teachers of math and astronomy. This picture book gave a lot of good opportunities for 2nd graders to learn new words and infer information from the illustrations. I liked the map of Alexanderia and would use that with a globe to have students understand the location of her city. Geography was never emphasized with me as a student and as a result, I don’t always know where a lot of countries are. I would like to reserve that pattern with my future students.
I plan on using this book for my read aloud field experience at Trinity. ( )
