"From the editor of the popular Annotated Pride and Prejudice comes an annotated edition of Jane Austen's Emma that makes her beloved tale of an endearingly inept matchmaker an even more satisfying read. Here is the complete text of the novel with more than 2,200 annotations on facing pages, including: explanations of historical context; citations from Austen's life, letters, and other writings; definitions and clarifications; literary comments and analysis; maps of places in the novel; an introduction, bibliography, and detailed chronology of events; [and] nearly 200 informative illustrations. Filled with fascinating information about everything from the social status of spinsters and illegitimate children to the shopping habits of fashionable ladies to English attitudes toward gypsies, David M. Shapard's Annotated Emma brings Austen's world into richer focus"--Provided by publisher.… (mehr)

Austen, Jane. The Annotated Emma. Edited by David M. Shapard. Anchor, 2012.
I have no complaints with most of the content of the copious endnotes in the e-text version of The Annotated Emma, except that I wish the notes were embedded in the text, or, failing that, at least at the bottom of the page. It is annoying to have to ferret them out at the end. One caveat: don’t trust anyone’s discussion of the cost of living and the value of money at the turn of the 19th century. Labor was cheap. Carriages were expensive. Beyond that, it is hard to tell for sure. 4 stars. ( )

Emma has always been my least favorite of Austen's major novels, but I enjoyed the story more this time around. Many of the annotations were unnecessary to me (particularly the definitions), but it's easy enough to skip over those. Other notes added details that would have been known by contemporary audiences but have now faded from common knowledge. ( )

Perfect -- the book itself, of course, but also this particular edition. I recommend it for the reader who has pretty much memorized Austen's texts and is looking for some fun in the footnote department. The annotation would drive anyone else up the wall. ( )

This was an annotated edition of Emma that was a lot of fun to read. The book is text on the left and notes, illustrations, etc. on the right side. Some of the notes were really interesting, especially those describing customs of the time, dress, furniture, and modes of travel. Less inspiring were his definitions of words that are in different usage now, and his analysis of the text which I found completely obvious.

I love Emma, it's one of my favorite Austen novels, and this was a fun way to read it for the fourth time (I think - I can't quite remember how many times I've read it!). ( )
