"Alan and Amelia, a British couple in their early thirties, move to Queens, in New York and, in their apartment building, come across Allan, a twentysomething of Guinean roots who quickly becomes for them the exemplar of American youth: aimless, photogenic ... looking for meaning in a world that seems to have already happened. After dropping his cell phone and shattering its screen, Allan decides not to replace it, a decision that leads to his beginning to reject some of the things his generation treats as sacred: chiefly, their penchant for "merging self-documentation and experience...having decided they prefer life flat to round." In the spirit of The Great Gatsby, in Johnny Allan, Keller paints a new portrait of America and a new Lost Generation, a carnival of sensory delights, music, misapprehension and beauty." -- Amazon.com… (mehr)

This is really a quick read...I was not as impressed as many of the other reviewers. I had a difficult time staying focused and wanting to finish the book. By half way through the book, I was turned off with Johnny Allan’s flamboyant attitude. I tended to skim through many pages of the book just to get it over with. This would not be a recommend for me. I really didn't like this book very much. The best part were the characters. I think it's an interesting view
on social media and how it influences our lives. I didn't think it was well written, kind of slap it together. It could have done better with some review and rewrite. ( )

I really enjoyed this novel. It was a quick read but the story was impactful. Johnny Allan makes friends with his neighbors and gives them insight into their own lives. He is a young man who decides he will no longer use social media after he breaks his phone. He strikes up a friendship with a couple in their early thirties who live in the same building and the story explores their interactions. I thought the characters were well drawn with enough quirks and details to seem like real people. It explored some interesting ideas - about how social media can define us and what happens when we break free from it.

I also enjoyed that in the back of book there is a list of music from the 20s that has been released into the public domain. It got me to listen to things I’d never had a chance to hear before. ( )

I nearly stopped reading this book a couple of times as I found the cadence of the author's writing style rather jarring somehow. I did finally finish it, but It seemed more like an angst-ridden journal or diary rather than a novel. However, it was an uncorrected advance copy, so perhaps the final version was a bit smoother & more coherent? ( )

The narrator of this novel is a man in his 30s who lives with his wife in present-day New York City. They are hip young professionals, with a large group of hip, young professional friends. They meet a young man who lives in their building and adopt him into their group and their lives. Although the author writes beautiful sentences and paragraphs, there is really not much story here. It is all surface, no substance. In an afterword, the author writes: "I wrote this book over the course of a month in August and September '13." It shows! ( )
