Three women from a Chinese immigrant family navigate complicated secrets when an elder daughter goes missing while visiting her dying grandmother in the Netherlands. Terrified yet determined, Amy, the sheltered baby of the family, retraces her movements, but instead of simple answers, she discovers something much more valuable: the truth.

Sylvie, the elder daughter, was extremely hard working all her life at school and work to be successful and hoping for acceptance from family and friends. I was drawn into her struggles right away. The story switches from past to present to reveal what led up to her disappearance. I liked both Sylvie and Amy and their different personalities. There is a mystery but the story is mainly about family relationships, misunderstandings and secrets. This was an enjoyable story. ( )

Wanted to read this book of Jean Kwok, because her life in reality took her to Holland, and I wanted to see how she incorporated that into her writing. Of the 3 books of her's I've read, this was less engaging for me than the other two, but I loved the customs and idioms that came through for different cultures. My interest in her was respired by a local book ban of Girl in Translation, and my husband picking up my copy of Mambo in Chinatown, because he knew I liked it (dancing, tai chi, chinese medicine, and noodles, plus a little romance) and he likes all but the first of those things.

For more on the book ban, from Jean Kwok herself, read here:

I had to re-read the book because of this. I hope Bucks County comes up to breathe in oxygen and can stop this craziness of banning books that can help our children learn so much about life, both theirs, and ones that are vastly different. Thank you, Jean Kwok. ( )

Another dnf. Maybe wasn’t the book for me at the time. ( )

This book is outside my reading range. I did enjoy the author's previous book, Girl in Translation, so I figured this was worth a shot. And like what I wanted to do with some of the Danish foods described in the book, I devoured it.

The mom and two sisters (Sylvie and Amy) took turns telling their stories with two timelines: before and after Sylvie's disappearance. The mother's writing style was starkly different than the two daughters. It felt like a direct translation of Chinese. Nice touch.

I didn't get a great connection any character, especially Sylvie who I couldn't understand her motivations. Mostly I kept turning pages to find the solution from the mystery and the portrayal of the Netherlands.

Dysfunctional Family Drama? Mystery? Cultural exploration? Searching for Sylvie Lee is all of these and more. Even though I guessed some of the major secrets, I was still engaged and fascinated by the story and the lives of these characters. I listened to the audio book which included three narrators (Sylvie, Amy, Ma). I empathized with all the characters (major and mInor) and wished their lives could have been different. (Not really a spoiler) but no happily ever after - just an engaging and engrossing story. ( )
